Joan Jett mellows but music still has the edge From teen band icon to legend, longtime road warrior rocks on By Bob Mehr (Contact) Friday, May 2, 2008 Q: I know there's been talk of a film project focusing on the Runaways -- what's going on with that now? A: There's a movie being written now about the Runaways, a feature film, based on our lives. They're talking to some of the girls, Cherie Currie, using things from her book, and they'd talked to Sandy West, the drummer, before she passed away. So we're working on this movie, but it's being done by major people, like John Linson ("Lords of Dogtown"). The script is being written now. In fact, I met with a screenwriter last night to talk to him about it. Q: Do you have a specific goal in mind with the film? A: I'm very proud of the Runaways and would like people to know more about them. I want to talk about the great things the Runaways did to inspire people. And also show how different the music scene was in the '70s. I mean, can you imagine 16-year-old girls running around playing in a rock-and-roll band -- we made what goes on with Lindsay Lohan look like nothing. Thank God that all the paparazzi stuff didn't exist, 'cause ... they would've had plenty of material. (laughs) Q: Are there any concerns about making sure the story is told accurately? A: Sure, getting the memories right and the language right, how everybody talked, the relationships between the girls. Really, I would like real teenagers to play it. I'd like it to be true. I don't want 20-year-olds playing 16. I'd like to get it right 'cause we probably have this one shot and that's it. This is just a segment. Here is a link to the entire interview: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2008/may/02/jett-mellows-but-music-still-has-the-edge/ Cherie mentioned to me a couple days ago that they had called in a new screenwriter. Must be the guy Joan mentions meeting with! I'm not sure if he is going to be helping or replacing Floria Sigismondi, as writer, but I assume she is still directing the film! Hopefully things will move ahead at a quicker pace now, anyway! Gus

Our most excellent Runaways friend WASTED posted this "Variety" update on the official Runaways message board quote: River Road Entertainment has stepped in to finance "The Runaways," the rock 'n' roll biopic about the '70s all-female rock band featuring Joan Jett, Cherie Currie and the late Sandy West. Film will be written and directed by Floria Sigismondi, best known for helming musicvids for David Bowie, the White Stripes and Marilyn Manson. Art and John Linson are producing alongside Bill Pohlad. Jett will exec produce the film (Daily Variety, April 17, 2007)."The Runaways" is casting and is slated to go into production in late fall. "It's great to be in business with River Road again," said Art Linson. "Bill and his team were fantastic partners on 'Into the Wild,' and we were looking for an opportunity to work with them again." Film follows the rock band from its early days on the Sunset Strip through the girls' meteoric rise to their dissolution and disillusionment. River Road's credits include "Brokeback Mountain," "Lust, Caution" and "Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus." The indie production and finance company is in production on the Terrence Malick-helmed drama "The Tree of Life," starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. There is also some talk about a CRAIGS LIST ad from an east coast agency, looking in LA, for several teen female roles, 14-16, some blonde, some dark haired, music talent a big plus, one role portrays Joan Jett.Read ALL about it on The Runaways Message Board! I guess we always knew that NEON ANGEL might not end up being the title of the movie and now after reading this, I'm wondering if it will be called THE RUNAWAYS!!! Either one would make a good title, in my opinion! Glad to hear it's moving right along!!! Long live The Runaways! Gus
