Documented Iraqi civilian deaths from violence: 82,567 – 90,088 This data is based on 14,098 database entries from the beginning of the war to 21 February 2008. The most recent weeks are always in the process of compilation and will rise further. Btw, the violence is escalating dramatically in recent weeks, reportedly! Gaps in recording and reporting suggest that even the highest total to date may be missing many civilian deaths from violence. How can we win the hearts and minds of these people when they are being killed at this rate? I hear 4 million are refugees now too because it's too dangerous for them to go home! Bush and Cheney should have been impeached long ago!

Divisive Dem Contest Could Boost McCaincnsnews.com By Fred Lucas CNSNews.com Staff Writer March 21, 2008 The lengthy Democratic primary contest bodes well for Republican chances of holding the White House, a new poll suggests.
As Democratic Senators Barack Obama of Illinois and Hillary Clinton of New York slug it out for the nomination, many of their supporters -- at least in Pennsylvania, site of the next major primary -- aren't committed to the party's ticket in November, according to a Franklin & Marshall College Poll. Among Obama supporters, 20 percent said they would vote for Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee, if Clinton beats their candidate for the nomination. Among Clinton supporters, 19 percent said they would support McCain in November if Obama is the Democratic nominee. (See poll) The significant number of potential defectors underscores how divisive the Democratic primary has been. Democrats won Pennsylvania in the 2000 and 2004 presidential races, but it was a competitive state in both election cycles. McCain, meanwhile, has touted his appeal to swing voters. "Pennsylvania is a must-win state for a Democratic presidential nominee," Nathan Gonzalez, political editor of the Rothenberg Political Report, told Cybercast News Service. "If there is a significant weakness for a Democrat in Pennsylvania, it could indicate a weakness in Ohio or other key states." Even a few months ago, the presidential race looked like a major uphill climb for any Republican candidate. But recent polls suggest a toss-up between McCain and either Democratic candidate. Obama and Clinton both have many negatives, which doesn't make the Pennsylvania poll too surprising, said Doris Graber, a political science professor at the University of Illinois. "Obama is very liberal, more liberal than we've seen on the campaign trail. Also, there is still racism out there," Graber told Cybercast News Service. "Hillary, we've known all along, has strong supporters. But there are also a lot of people who would never vote for her. There is some antipathy from the Clinton years. Some wouldn't vote for her because she's a woman." However, Gonzales cautioned not to read too much into a single poll, or discount the desire of Democratic voters to move beyond the George W. Bush years, of which McCain has become the heir.
"This is a very personal and competitive Democratic primary," he said. "Clinton and Obama supporters have trouble seeing themselves with the other now. A healing period will have to happen." http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewPolitics.asp?Page=/Politics/archive/200803/POL20080321a.html

Plus 7 more "new" American deaths have occurred since Easter but only 4 of them have been cofirmed by the DoD, so far! Too bad we're not allowed to see all the flag draped coffins but our fearless leader is afraid to let us! It might turn us against his war or something!

Former U.S. Senator Mike Gravel joins Libertarian Party ranks
Believes Democrats are out of touch with American citizens Washington, D.C. - Mike Gravel, a former Alaskan Senator and Democratic candidate for president, has joined the Libertarian Party. "I'm joining the Libertarian Party because it is a party that combines a commitment to freedom and peace that can't be found in the two major parties that control the government and politics of America," says Gravel. "My libertarian views, as well as my strong stance against war, the military industrial complex and American imperialism, seem not to be tolerated by Democratic Party elites who are out of touch with the average American; elites that reject the empowerment of American citizens I offered to the Democratic Party at the beginning of this presidential campaign with the National Initiative for Democracy." Gravel served in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1981. Most recently, Gravel was a Democratic presidential candidate, though forced out of national debates by Democratic Party leadership and the media. Gravel officially became a member of the Libertarian Party today. Gravel is the most recent former member of Congress to switch to the Libertarian Party. In 2006, former Republican Congressman Bob Barr joined the Libertarian Party. "It is a distinct honor to have another former member of Congress within the Libertarian Party," says Barr. "Just as Senator Gravel believes Democrats have lost touch with the American public, I too concluded Republicans had lost their core principles, and could no longer associate myself with the GOP. While coming from opposite sides of the aisle, Senator Gravel and I definitely agree on the fundamental need for systemic change in our political system, and that the only way we have of effecting that change is by supporting and working in the Libertarian Party, which is the only political party in America that consistently works in word and deed to maximize individual liberty and minimize government power." "We're honored to have a former member of the United States Senate join our ranks," says Libertarian Party Executive Director Shane Cory. “Senator Gravel has a sincere dedication to empowering the American people and eliminating the corrupting influence of the two major parties. His switch from the Democratic Party, as well as former Congressman Barr’s abandonment of the GOP, shows that the Libertarian Party is truly a big tent organization moving firmly in the direction of Liberty.” The Libertarian Party is America's third largest political party, founded in 1971 as an alternative to the two main political parties. You can find more information on the Libertarian Party by visiting www.lp.org. The Libertarian Party proudly stands for smaller government, lower taxes and more freedom. SR : The following was sent to me via EMAIL
Only read this if you are ready to be "Enlightened"
Recently the FAA has grounded hundreds of MD-80's, were told they were for security checks. I have new and important information regarding the grounding of this many aircraft of the same type. MD-80 are old, most are already paid for, but use a lot of fuel, so crashing an MD-80 would be an insurance bonanza for the airline. But wait. The FAA wants you to believe they're looking for Waldo. He's in Vancouver not on a MD-80, so the government lied. This misdirection is to keep us believing the FAA is concerned about passenger safety when we all know the FAA is in bed with the airlines since the FAA is also tasked with marketing and promoting air travel. There is, no has to be another reason for the FAA causing these airlines to lose all that money and strand all those passengers, so we must follow the money. I have a secret report from a high placed official who wishes to remain anonymous he said, "They have outfitted some of these MD-80s to carry special terrorist cargo including nuclear weapons, and that's why the had to ground the whole fleet, so no one would know." Since Bush had planes flown into the WTC they had to ground the whole fleet so these upgrades for future terrorist operations by the Bush administration could not be traced to a specific plane in the shop at a specific time. Keep in mind many service centers are now overseas. Bush needs money for his library so terrorist states offered to pay him millions to outfit American planes with special terrorist upgrades. Then Haliburton will clean up after the US goes to war. Never mind the US always contracted with Haliburton for the same services in the same manner for years, facts be damned this is truth I hope you believe. We have to stop this threat of the MD-80.

CBS: Iraqi government corruption funds insurgents who kill Americans
David Edwards and Muriel Kane / Raw Story | April 14, 2008 The government of Iraq is facing many challenges to its ability to run the country, both internal and external. According to a new report by 60 Minutes, “one of the biggest problems is corruption, which is robust even by Middle Eastern standards.” “Bribery and outright theft are flourishing in virtually every Iraqi ministry,” notes CBS’s Steve Kroft, “and some of those ill-gotten gains are being used to kill American troops.” State Department official James Mattil told CBS that the corruption is “across-the-board.” Much of the stolen money finds its way to Iraqi insurgents or militias, while “in other cases, it is the militias and insurgents themselves who control some of the ministries who are involved in the corruption.” “It’s known and tolerated by the prime minister and other officials within the government,” emphasized Mattil, who observed the corruption first-hand while assigned as an advisor to Iraq’s former Commissioner of Public Integrity, Judge Radhi al-Radhi. Judge Radhi himself told CBS during an interview in 2006 that more than half a billion dollars had been stolen from the Iraqi defense ministry. Following that interview, he attempted to widen his investigation to other ministries, but was met with death threats and the murder of thirty-one members of his staff. In July 2007 a missile was fired at his house. He and his family finally left Iraq last September and are now living in the suburbs of Washington, DC. Shortly before Radhi left Iraq, his commission was coming under increasing pressure from Prime Minister Maliki, who issued a memo saying they could not bring charges against anyone in the president’s office or current or former ministers without his permission. “It basically put a stop to any anti-corruption activities within the Iraqi government,” Mattil told CBS, “and it came directly from the prime minister’s office.” Mattil shared this memo with his colleagues at the State Department but received no response. A draft report on the corruption was leaked to the press last summer, but the State Department responded only by making the report classified. After Radhi sought asylum in the United States, he was called to testify before the House Oversight Committee. Chairman Henry Waxman then asked Secretary of State Rice to comment on Rhadi’s allegations. “Mr. Chairman, I will have to get back to you,” Rice replied. “I don’t know precisely what you are referring to.” “Six months later,” CBS concludes, “Waxman’s staff was still waiting for an answer.” CBS News has more here. http://www.infowars.com/?p=1504

Bruce Springsteen Endorses Obama, Defends Candidate's Comments
By Jeff Bliss April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Bruce Springsteen, whose songs about working-class angst have fueled a career spanning four decades, endorsed Barack Obama for president in a letter to fans posted on his Web site. ``After the damage done over the past eight years, a great American reclamation project needs to be undertaken,'' he wrote. ``Senator Obama is the best candidate to lead that project.'' Springsteen, whose songs include ``Born to Run,'' ``Factory'' and ``Born in the USA,'' said that opponents had taken some of Obama's comments out of context. Senator Hillary Clinton of New York, Obama's rival for the nomination, said that the Illinois senator's comments about some voters becoming ``bitter'' because of their economic status showed he was out of touch. ``Critics have tried to diminish Senator Obama through the exaggeration of certain of his comments and relationships,'' Springsteen wrote. The musician's endorsement comes before the Pennsylvania primary on April 22. Springsteen, 58, who is from neighboring New Jersey, was a prominent supporter of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry in 2004, playing concerts in swing states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as part of get-out-the-vote efforts. Kerry won those two states in his loss to President George W. Bush in the general election. By winning back unhappy GOP voters, McCain makes it a raceBy ALAN FRAM and TREVOR TOMPSON, Associated Press Writers WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans are no longer underdogs in the race for the White House. To pull that off, John McCain has attracted disgruntled GOP voters, independents and even some moderate Democrats who shunned his party last fall. Partly thanks to an increasingly likable image, the Republican presidential candidate has pulled even with the two Democrats still brawling for their party's nomination, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo! News poll released Thursday. Just five months ago — before either party had winnowed its field — the survey showed people preferred sending an unnamed Democrat over a Republican to the White House by 13 percentage points. Also helping the Arizona senator close the gap: Peoples' opinions of Hillary Rodham Clinton have soured slightly, while their views of Barack Obama have improved though less impressively than McCain's. The survey suggests that those switching to McCain are largely attuned to his personal qualities and McCain may be benefiting as the two Democrats snipe at each other during their prolonged nomination fight. David Mason of Richmond, Va., is typical of the voters McCain has gained since last November, when the 46-year-old personal trainer was undecided. Mason calls himself an independent and voted in 2004 for President Bush, whom he considers a strong leader but a disappointment due to the "no-win situation" in Iraq. "It's not that I'm that much in favor of McCain, it's the other two are turning me off," Mason said of Clinton and Obama, the senators from New York and Illinois, in explaining his move toward McCain. As for the Republican's experiences as a Vietnam War prisoner and in the Senate, Mason said, "All he's been through is an asset." By tracking the same group of roughly 2,000 people throughout the campaign, the AP-Yahoo poll can gauge how individual views are evolving. What's clear is that some Republican-leaning voters who backed Bush in 2004 but lost enthusiasm for him are returning to the GOP fold _ along with a smaller but significant number of Democrats who have come to dislike their party's two contenders. The findings of the survey, conducted by Knowledge Networks, provide a preview of one of this fall's battlegrounds. Though some unhappy Republicans will doubtless stay with McCain, both groups are teeming with centrist swing voters who will be targeted by both parties. The poll shows that McCain's appeal has grown since November by more than the Democrats' has dwindled. McCain gets about 10 percentage points more now than a generic Republican candidate got last fall; Obama and Clinton get about 5 points less than a nameless Democrat got then. Underlining McCain's burgeoning popularity, in November about four in 10 considered McCain likeable, decisive, strong and honest while about half do now. Obama is seen as more likeable and stronger now but his numbers for honesty and decisiveness have remained flat, while Clinton's scores for likeability and honesty have dropped slightly. "You can't trust Hillary and Obama's too young," said Pauline Holsinger, 60, a janitorial worker in Pensacola, Fla., now backing McCain who preferred an unnamed Democrat last fall. "I like him better, he's more knowledgeable about the war" in Iraq. Voters at this stage in a campaign commonly focus more on candidates' personal qualities. That usually changes as the general election approaches and they pay more attention to issues and partisan loyalty — meaning that McCain's prospects could fade at a time when the public is deeply unhappy with the war, the staggering economy and Bush. For now, more than one in 10 who weren't backing the unnamed Republican candidate in last November's survey are supporting McCain, a shift partly offset by a smaller number of former undecideds now embracing Obama or Clinton. Of those now backing McCain, about one-third did not support the generic GOP candidate last November. Among people who have moved toward McCain, about two-thirds are discontented Bush voters, with many calling themselves independents but leaning Republican. About half of this group say they are conservative, yet their views on issues are more moderate than many in the party, with some opposing the war in Iraq. They have favorable but not intensely enthusiastic views of McCain _ for example, two-thirds find him likeable while far fewer find him compassionate or refreshing. "He's known, he's a veteran," said David Tucker, a retired Air Force technician from Alexandria, La., and Bush voter who was undecided last November but has ruled out Obama and Clinton. "I understand him better." Around a third of the voters newly supporting McCain lean Democratic and mostly backed Democrat John Kerry in 2004. They are moderates who disapprove of Bush and the war in Iraq, but find McCain likeable, much more so than they did last November. Many McCain-backing Democrats express one consistent concern about McCain — his age. "Let's face it, we're not getting any younger," said retired accountant Sheldon Rothman of Queens, N.Y., who like McCain is 71. "There are too many imponderables when you get to that age, especially with the stress of the presidency." Whether those now switching to McCain will stay that way once the Democrats choose a candidate is what the fall campaign will be about. "McCain has a history of doing well with independent voters," said GOP pollster David Winston. He said voters' preference for an unnamed Democratic candidate but McCain's strong performance against Obama and Clinton means "Democrats have an advantage their candidates are not taking advantage of." Democratic pollster Alan Secrest said the contrasting numbers mean that while the voters' overall mood favors Democrats, they are still taking the measure of Clinton and Obama. "The Democrats will have to earn their way this fall," he said. The AP-Yahoo survey of 1,844 adults was conducted from April 2-14 and had an overall margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points. Included were interviews with 863 Democrats, for whom the margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3.3 points, and 668 Republicans, with a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.8 points. The poll was conducted over the Internet by Knowledge Networks, which initially contacted people using traditional telephone polling methods and followed with online interviews. People chosen for the study who had no Internet access were given it for free. — AP News Survey Specialist Dennis Junius contributed to this report http://news.yahoo.com/page/election-2008-political-pulse-swing-voters
