Well, according to the latest correspondence from the athletic department, the new gym (Redwood Court don't you think?) will NOT be ready for the beginning of basketball season but will instead be opening in January of 2008. Therefore, the basketball season will begin in the East Gym. That's fitting I think, because the last game in that gym cannot be a loss. Luckily there are 7 home games scheduled for February, as well as the potential for a first-round conference playoff game in March, so several games will take place in the new facility...if it's finished.

In addition, a private donor has given the money necessary to complete the seating in the new arena, so 2,000 seats will be available when it opens. It'll be interesting to see if 2,000 will be enough. It should be, unless the team goes nuts again. My question...will the athletic department create a student section in this new arena? Hopefully they've considered that and it's in the works.

A new feature is in place for season ticket holders: a Season Ticket Scholarship Donation (STSD). This is an OPTION that ensures the buyer a particular seat location. You can still buy season tickets without purchasing the STSD, but you won't be guaranteed a particular seat. Others that buy the STSD will have first choice. This is a pretty expensive deal for most Humboldt County residents: $1,000 for Pepsi Row seats, $750 for Station 76 seats, and $500 for others. The STSD is good for FIVE years and guarantees the purchaser of it his/her pick of the available season seats. I'm a season ticket holder but won't be buying it. The seats will all be good regardless of location, and I can always donate to the program in the future if I want to...or if I ever have the means to do so. However, this may be a good way to generate scholarship revenue and if people feel generous this simplifies the process.

Season tickets are going up again...$250 for regular seats, $350 for station 76 seats, and $450 for Pepsi Row seats. My man Super Fan's gotta be loving how much his ticket has gone up. He basically has to purchase the STSD to keep his seat, so he's looking at $1,450 to pay this year as opposed to what, $350 last year?

Making the STSD an option was a very good move on the athletic department's part. Had they made it mandatory, a lot of people would've been put off and lost interest. Overall, I think this is a good idea the department has. It'll be interesting to see what kind of response they get.

Here's a little history on the cost for the Pepsi Row courtside seat that I've purchased the last six years.

2001-02 (the year the Pepsi Row was created): $200 for the season
Note: I was able to purchase a seat in late December. I thought it would be a good idea at the time since I was traveling from Sonoma County to get to the game.

2002-03: Price increase to $250 for the season.

2003-04 to 2006-07: Price at $300 for the season.

2007-08: $450 + $1,000 Scholarship Donation for Five Years.

I think the big problem in the whole scheme of things is the scholarship donation. It is a steep price to pay. I can understand the $450 part for the season ticket. Basically, that is to make up for the $50 increase that did not occur in 2004-05 and 2005-06. Follow the pattern in the year by year breakdown and you will see my point.

I got a plan in mind to pay for the seat by the January 1st deadline. Hopefully, that will also include more exposure for Humboldt State should someone find out who I am and put me on a show. Stay tuned on that one.

Looks like we will be lucky if the new gym is ready by February 2008. My guess is that the entire 2007/08 season is played in the East gym.

I also do not understand why they are going to demolish the West Gym (built in the early 1970s) and the existing swimming pool, if HSU's goal is to double enrollment over the next 20 years. If they significantly increase enrollment, wouldn't it make sense to increase P/E facilities for future students?

I know the funding for the new gym is for a "remodel," so if they add new square footage they have to eliminate old square footage, but razing the West Gym seems senseless.

Here is an ER article:

Delay of game
by Sean Quincey, 8/10/2007

Be prepared for another season of hardwood benches, jam-packed exit doors and long lines at the ticket booth.

Humboldt State University basketball will be back in the East Gym this year.

To those who climb Union Street to head into the 76-year-old gym, take a look across the way to see what could have been — or, more accurately, what will be sometime next year.

HSU last summer broke ground on construction of a new gym that will eventually replace the East Gym. According to a school news release, the new building, currently called the Physical Education Project, was scheduled to open in November, much to the delight of season-ticket holders set to pay a higher fee than ever.

Construction delays, however, have pushed back the opening of the $45.8 million building and the most favorable projections see it opening in late January.

“It will probably be ready to go in February or March,” said HSU Senior Communications Director Paul Mann.

Which means that both the HSU men’s and women’s basketball teams will play roughly two-thirds of their upcoming season in the old gym. Basketball season-ticket holders, who are being asked to “donate” between $500 and $1,000 to lock up their $350 seat (up from $250 last year) for five years will instead get those seats for six years because of the delay.

The new gym will hold 2,000 people, 550 more than the Jacks’ current home. It will be more spacious and 500 of the bleacher seats, those reserved for season-ticket holders, will be padded, theater-style seats instead of wood.

“We may have to play all our games in the East Gym,” HSU Director of Athletics Dan Collen said. “That’s construction. Obviously with a ($45.8 million) building, there are usually delays here and there for a variety of reasons. We’re just excited that we’re going to have a great facility.”

Mann said the reasons for the delay are twofold: First, inclement weather earlier this year prevented construction crews from putting in work. Secondly, “the demand on the construction industry has been so heavy during the time of building the PE complex that we’ve had to endure extra long leave time while ordering items.”

“That’s just the nature of things, that’s all,” Mann said.

Mann didn’t put a percentage on the amount of the first phase of the project that’s completed, but said the foundation’s laid, the concrete walls are up and the internal framing and structural steel parts of the building are finished. The crew — Kiewit Construction Co. — still needs to do wiring, the final 20 percent of the decking and roughly 80 percent of the external framing.

Six weeks after Phase One is complete, it will be on to Phase Two, which includes the demolition of the West Gym and natatorium, along with installation of a new Redwood Bowl Plaza and minor renovations to the East Gym. Phase Two, according to HSU’s Web site, is scheduled for completion by October 2008.

HSU is receiving funding for the project out of the Cal State University facilities budget. The university began talking about the need for a new gym roughly 15 years ago and finally had its plans approved by the CSU three years ago.

Of the $45.8 million budget the CSU authorized, $41.5 million of it is dedicated to construction alone. The rest will go to the planning and design and equipment for the building.

Mann said because HSU has what is called a design build contract for the project, the cost will not exceed the original amount even if there are more delays or the price for materials changes. The only way it will cost more money is if the university is the cause of any future delays.

In with the view: After delays, new gym to be finished by fall
Sean Quincey/The Times-Standard
Article Launched: 03/06/2008 01:30:53 AM PST

Out with the old and in with the view.

Just like that, with Tuesday's East Gym finale officially in the books, the attention now turns to the nearly completed Kinesiology and Athletics Buidling, which will house the Jacks through their next era of indoor sports.

And what a house it will be. When it finally gets done.

”I spent a good 20 years in the East Gym as a student-athlete and as a coach. It brings fond memories for me personally,” HSU Athletic Director Dan Collen said. “It's hard to beat the East Gym, but I'm excited about the new facility.”

With each passing day there is more to get excited about. Project Manager Traci Ferdolage led the Times-Standard through a guided tour of the gym on Wednesday and revealed a facility only months from being completed.

The crew was literally filling the Olympic-sized swimming pool, fixtures for basketball goals were already installed into the ceiling and the new, NCAA regulation hoops -- which can be rolled away and will not be attached to the gym -- were wrapped in cellophane, thousands of memories yet to pass through their orange rims.

Most of the windows were in, which is a noteworthy feat considering that natural light shines everywhere in the building except for the locker rooms and storage rooms.

”I feel like we finally turned the corner,” she said.

It's about time. The $44.8 million project, which broke ground in summer 2006, has seen its share
of wrong turns. Ferdolage said inclement weather has added roughly 10 days to construction, but the big obstacle has been the school's ability to physically receive building supplies.
With steel already in high demand, it's been a challenge to get the stuff to Humboldt County, especially when other, more expensive projects, based in more highly populated areas, demand attention and supplies.

”Our geographical isolation affects us,” Ferdolage said. “Things certainly have not gone as quickly as the original plan called for, but it still does not affect the contractual construction plan.”

HSU ambitiously predicted that the new building, which holds a 2,000-seat gym, the aforementioned pool and a dance studio, was going to be completed by last fall. The entire project, which includes the demolition of the natatorium connected to the West Gym, is scheduled to be completed by January of 2009.

Humboldt State spokesman Paul Mann said the roof and most of the siding is scheduled to be installed by March 20, and those who will occupy office space inside the building could begin moving in as early as May. The facility could be open for use in the summer, but Mann said that by the time the fall semester begins, it will be ready for classes and full-time occupancy.

POINTS OF INTEREST

Swimming Pool

Lit by three gigantic west-facing windows and another trio of 16x24-foot skylights, a six-lane Olympic-sized pool overlooks Union Street and is the first sight you see when driving up the hill toward the East Gym.

Two of the three windows can be pulled open, letting fresh air and the sight of Redwood trees -- no buildings can be seen from the pool -- flood the room.

Area has a “wet” class room with furnishings made to withstand water. Locker rooms open directly to pool. Also has smaller, more shallow pool for rehabs, classes, etc.

Gym

Will hold 2,000 fans (up from 1,400 in the East Gym) and bleachers will come in from all four walls, creating a close, intimate atmosphere.

Has a much more intricate and advanced heating/cooling system. Indoor temps monitored electronically and air pumped in from outside and blown through vents in the floor instead of from above, like conventional gyms.

Highest point is 45 feet from the floor. Natural lighting enters from above court and highest points of far wall. Gym sits on second floor.

Construction

Original feasibility study, done in 1993, called for a project with 100,000 assignable square feet. Ten years later, HSU secured funds for the current 82,695-square foot building.

HSU broke ground on the project in the summer of 2006 with a lofty goal of completing the gym by last fall. However, inclement weather delayed construction, and the rural location of the campus made it hard on companies to deliver supplies, which are in high demand in other, more populated areas.

By May HSU hopes to begin moving in and the building should be ready to use in the summer. Demolition of the old swimming pool should be done by January.

Funding

The project will cost $44.8 million, $31.6 million of which is dedicated to construction. Practically all the costs were paid for using funds from Proposition 55, which passed in 2003.

HSU paid for two feasibility studies -- 1993 and 2003 -- and other relatively minor costs. Those studies were forwarded to the CSU Chancellor's office for approval.

The original plan was rejected because HSU's enrollment couldn't justify such a big project, and finally the Chancellor's office agreed to fund the smaller building in '03. Once approved, the plans were put on a sort of CSU-wide “wish list,” with projects from the state's 23 schools on it.

When HSU's number came up, it was allowed to break ground.

Future

Expect the wide-open, airy, even sporty feel of the new Kinesiology and Athletics Building to spread down to the Redwood Bowl.

The natatorium -- swimming pool area -- that connects to the West Gym is slated for demolition by January of next year. The area between the football field and KAB will cleared out, replaced by a new covered walkway and landscaping.

Don't expect, however, any relief in parking. Plans for a parking structure are virtually nonexistent and the only new spots created by the KAB are for the handicapped.
