Cal State San Bernardino VS Cal Poly Pomona

Humboldt State VS CSU Monterey Bay

Cal State L.A. VS UC San Diego

Cal State Dominguez Hills VS San Francisco State

Mon Bay gets another crack at Humboldt, WITH Joe Mitchell playing (AND Big CY)

Pomona gets their wish:
Playing Berdooo at "The Arena"

San Diego figures out how to lose to LA

And the Toros will untilize their "Dribble Drive" offense against the SF Gators [Check an SI article that lists DH as using this "revolutionary" offense]

I just got this info from the CCAA website, which has a completely different matchup.. according to the site these are the first round matchups

No. 8 Cal Poly Pomona at No. 1 Humboldt State
No. 7 UC San Diego at No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino
No. 6 San Francisco State at No. 3 Cal State L.A.
No. 5 Cal State Dominguez Hills at No. 4 Cal State Monterey Bay

To me, Humboldt getting the 1 seed, may not be such a great thing.. Playing Pamona in consecutive games isn't easy to do, and Pamona seems to be an extremely strong 8 seed...

I just saw these rankings too. I think we have a great chance against Pomona. We just played them, so I think our players are used to their trap (which was what they used when they came back). I do still wish that we played Monterey Bay because they are fun to watch and I think we match up well against them, but its hard to complain about being the number 1 seed. I think it is just because they arbitrarily gave San Berny got the home court advantage though, so they were like, "screw it, lets give Humboldt the number 1 seed". Did you see that Monterey actually got the number 4 seed? I'm not sure those tie-breakers are accurate.

The tie breaker is dead on. I figured out the head to head records between the five teams that tied for third in the conference. Here are the results.

Cal State Los Angeles: 6-2
Cal State Monterey Bay: 5-3
Cal State Dominguez Hills: 4-4
San Francisco State: 3-5
UC San Diego: 2-6

Absoulte chaos to the nth degree. Enough said.

Those pairings were how I thought things would turn out. Clearly I was wrong.

I would like to know how we won the tie-breaker. If it was based on our performance, than ok. But if it was a coin flip or a calculated thing, than it can't really be called a "tie breaker", maybe an "executive decision".

I guess the tie breaker that gave us the number 1 seed is the one about our record vs. the next highest ranked opponent. Berdoo and Humboldt both beat Cal State L.A. twice, but we beat Monterey Bay twice and they only beat Monterey Bay once. That must have been the tie breaker. Kinda sucky, I didn't really want to play Pomona again right away. I thought that Monterey Bay would be the most exciting game.

My approach is very simple. You got to be the only team in the tournament with three wins in one week. It don't matter how we get there. All that matters is to survive and advance. It does mean that there will be some adjustments by both teams. What there they? I'll often my thoughts in the next couple of days. Then, we will find out Tuesday what those adjustments are by both teams.

While leaving the gym last night we ran into the Pomona team in their vans. One of their coaches was convinced that they were going home to play San Bernardino. We had a quick chat about how I wanted them to beat the snot out of the yotes. Now apparently that coach was wrong and they get to spend 4 days and 5 nights on a Pacific Northwest vacation.

I was sure that the Broncos lost they will be back home. This road trip can be a good thing or a bad thing for my broncos. In my opinion the broncos are either going to get blowout or pick up the upset. Anyways it a grudge match between the two teams. the winner advance in the tournament.

While I don't expect a Jacks' letdown, the Broncos have a lot more to play for. Humboldt is a certain seed in the West Region tournament, but the only way CPP could get there is by winning the CCAA Tournament. I don't think the Broncos are happy about playing the Jacks again. They feel they have been screwed by the CCAA (hasn't everyone, just by the fact of this tournament's existence) and shouldn't be playing the Jacks anyway. Everything said and done, I don't see either team giving it up easily Tuesday, which makes for yet another entertaining game.

I agree. I don't see a blowout...but I don't see a Pomona win either. Not in the East Gym. I expect Humboldt to play w/ everything they've got, even though they're in the regional already and have a semifinal game in San Bernardino next weekend.

Grand Canyon's coach Scott Mossman on Humboldt hosting the regional: “We’ve been treated like kings the whole time we’ve been here. Everywhere we went it was like a first-class operation. I wish the tournament was here every year. This is a college basketball atmosphere.”

"Its cute how they have Pack the Gym night. Up here, we just call that Saturday." - PosseBoy

Eureka Times Standard has the breakdown on the tie-breaker. I guess we can thank Chico for beating Dominguez Hills for giving HSU the title. Does that mean we are not co-champions with SB? I'm not sure on that part.

Coyotes, Broncos steamed at CCAA
By Michelle Gardner, Staff Writer
Article Launched: 03/02/2008 09:55:35 PM PST

Neither Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball coach Greg Kamansky nor Cal State San Bernardino coach Jeff Oliver liked the idea of a California Collegiate Athletic Association conference tournament when it was announced a year ago.
The first one is a day away and the two like the idea even less now.

Quarterfinal games will be held Tuesday at the sites of the highest seeded schools while Friday's semifinals and Saturday's championship games will be at Coussoulis Arena.

The No. 2 seeded Coyotes (22-6, 15-5) will open play at home at 7:30 p.m. against No. 7 UC San Diego (15-11, 11-9) while the No. 8 Broncos (11-14, 10-10) will play at No. 1 Humboldt State (20-7, 15-5), whom they played in their regular-season finale on Friday.

On the women's side, it will be the two local teams squaring off at 5:30 p.m. with the No. 2 Coyotes (21-6, 15-5) playing host to the seventh-seeded Broncos (11-15, 8-12).

Both Oliver and Kamansky have beefs with the conference brain trust.

Oliver is upset that the Coyotes - who finished tied with Humboldt State for first place - won't be considered regular-season co-champions by the CCAA, as has been done in the past.

In 2005, the Coyotes finished tied with Cal Poly Pomona and the two were declared co-champions. Both got banners.

Cal State has finished first or tied for first in seven of the last nine years.

"They're telling me I can't even claim a share of the conference and I have a problem with that. ... To say that we're not at least a co-champion is asinine," he said. "There will be a banner hanging in Coussoulis Arena, I guarantee that, even if I have to buy it myself."
The Coyotes had a better strength of schedule, better overall record and higher West Region ranking than Humboldt, but the teams split their head-to-head games.

The conference's criteria called for the first-place tiebreaker to be "finish against the third-place team" - a problem, because five teams finished tied for third.

After another tiebreaker to decide that, Humboldt came out on top because it swept Cal State Monterey Bay while the Coyotes split.

"As even as all these teams are it doesn't seem right it should come down to that," Oliver said.

Kamansky's beef is that he was never notified where his team was playing by a conference representative.

The Broncos knew they would play on the road Tuesday - either at San Bernardino or at Humboldt, where they played last weekend.

The team had plans to return home Saturday, unless their quarterfinal opponent was Humboldt again, in which case they were to stay in Arcata.

San Diego was in the same position, having played Friday at San Francisco and needing to know where to go next.

Both Kamansky and Oliver said they will take up their issues with the powers-that-be at this weekend's conference meeting.

"I might just have to explode. Friday night, we were sure we were playing San Bernardino. Humboldt was sure we were playing San Bernardino," Kamamsky said. "We should have just showed up at San Bernardino Tuesday night."

Kamansky's other issue with the conference tournament is the time it takes his players away from classes.

The Broncos were out of school all last week because of the road trip and now have to stay an extra four days because of the game Tuesday.

If the Broncos were to win the CCAA tournament, they would advance to the regional - which will likely be held in Alaska.

"We would have kids attending their classes for about three days in three weeks, right before finals," he said.

"That's not what we should be about. When they started this tournament they said it was for the student-athlete. Well, I don't think it's in the best interest of the student-athlete. The athlete, maybe."

I'm not sure that anybody really likes the idea of the conference tournament. And I stand corrected, apparently we are the sole champions. Its pretty dumb if you ask me, we should probably be co-champions. The fact that the championship was decided by a game between Dominguez Hills and Chico doesn't make sense.

I also agree with Pomona's coach's points about academics, although its not true it would be right before finals. It would be smack dab in the middle of midterms though.

There is also no reason the Broncos should have been out of school all week last week for games on Thursday and Friday.

I don't know. The HSU website's poll indicated that over 40% liked the tournament because it gave the teams more to play for...like they need 3 games to determine the conference champion. Why the hell do you play 20 regular season games then? If you're going to have a tournament, why not do it at the BEGINNING of the year to create interest and give the teams an initial look at one another? Put ALL the teams in there and give byes to the top 3 teams from LAST season.

I absolutely detest the conference tournament...ALL conference tournaments actually, including division I. I hate the fact that a team from a low major conference can have a mediocre-poor season, but get on a run in the tournament and get into the field of 64 w/ a 12-18 record or something like that, screwing a more deserving team out of a spot. Who would get screwed in the west region if SF State or Monterey Bay wins the CCAA?

Also, I don't think San Bernardino OR Humboldt can claim a conference championship. The team that wins the tournament will get the banner...another crock of crap. Can we go back to the GNAC?

Officially, the regulars season CCAA championship is a Co-Championship. That's what it always was, but a slip by the league SID made it seem otherwise. That all got worked out today, with HSU of course taking the high road and telling the league office and the CSUSB AD that we don't have any problem sharing the regular-season title.

As far as the tournament, hardly any coaches supported the idea. Academics is always the "make us look holy" excuse, but finances and wanting to have a competitive advantage are the primary motives for all coaches and ADs. (My cynicism rears its ugly head). I agree completely with the idea that the whole season's accomplishments get watered down and that some deserving team could get left out.

It won't be HSU. Just win, baby!

well for the academics side if the cal poly pomona men's team win out they will miss a ton of class before finals. cal poly pomona is on the quarter system which means finals are coming up for us. this week they play up north for the final two on thursday and friday. they probally left wednesday morning at the latest. Now that the men's team play you guys again why leave and come back 2 days later. I mean you leave saturday and fly back up monday is pointless to come back. That means the team fly back on wednesday. If they some how win @ humboldt and the conference tournament, the west region will be in Anchorage the weekend before finals. the team will probally leave tuesday or wednesday. That means the men's team which a big if win out will only attend about 4 or 5 classes just before finals week

It seems as though most people on this forum dislike the conference tourney idea ( myself included) for all the same reasons. I'm glad the CCAA got it right in the end. But it does not surprise me, based on my experiences with the CCAA this. It seems like the turnover in staff plus the new thing have caused confusion.

It is interesting to see that all of the top seeds lost, in very close games. I read somewhere that the CCAA would consider the tournament a success if it made money. It will be interesting to see how many fans show up for the games this weekend.

San Bernadino has a beautiful facility that can seat ~5,000, yet their average crowd was 795 for the year (this number is inflated, because it includes a "Pack the Gym Night" where they drew ~2,800 fans when they gave out roughly 50,000 free tickets). If SB made it to the finals, the CCAA semis and finals might draw 1,000 per game.

Without SB in the tournament, I don't expect the final three CCAA games to draw well.

Looking at last night's games, the attendance figures were:

HSU & Pomona 1,400
SB & UCSD 422
CSLA & SF 353
CSMB & DH 840

HSU had another sellout and Monterey had a nice crowd. I can't believe that only 422 people showed up for the SB/SD game.

My guess is the CCAA tourney will draw like the preseason tournaments (i.e. 100-400), which is a joke. It doesn't look like the CCAA tourney will be making money with crowds like that, and if that is the case, the CCAA should consider dropping the tournament in future years.

Another issue is that there is a possibility that one of the CCAA co-champs (regular season) might not make it into the regional, which would be a tremendous injustice.

It looks to me like Seattle will be out in the Regionals. I don't see how they can stay in. The CCAA tournament winner will move into their place. I don't see how this is fair. Seattle will win the last game but it shouldn't be enough to take the place of Humboldt or Brigham Young. Central even if they lose both games this week should still be above Seattle.
