BELGRADE, Serbia --Imagine waking up in a morgue after being declared dead by your doctor half a day earlier.

That's what happened to 91-year-old Janina Kolkiewicz, who was declared dead by her doctor last week after her family found her unconscious at her home in the eastern Polish town of Ostrow Lubelski.

"I went to my aunt's room to ask her what she wants for breakfast," said niece Bogumila Kolkiewicz, who takes care of the elder Kolkiewicz. "It's then that I noticed that she is not breathing and does not have pulse. I called for our family doctor."

After examining Kolkiewicz, the family doctor declared the death Nov. 6 at about 9:30 a.m. local time and wrote her death certificate.

"She was in her bed for another two hours, she was ice-cold, did not breath, did not move, had her eyes and mouth closed," the niece, 52, said. "When the body was taken to morgue it was carried on the stretchers; she never moved and was ice cold.

"We were slowly coming to terms that aunty has passed away. By Thursday evening everything was sorted. We paid for her death notice, bought the coffin, talked to priest and booked her funeral."

After midnight, however, Bogumila and her husband were awakened by ringing at the door more than 12 hours after the morgue vehicle had departed with her aunt. It was an anxious morgue employee informing them that there was a mistake and that her aunt was alive, Kolkiewicz said.

"Morgue staff noticed that she was moving in her zipped body bag," she said.

"When she came home, she complained she was cold. Together with our doctor we were fighting hypothermia the whole night."

The doctor who issued the death certificate said she had no idea how her patient came back to life.

"I'm stunned, I don't understand what happened," Dr. Wieslawa Czyz, a medical doctor with 28 years of professional experience, told national TVP. "Her heart had stopped beating and she was no longer breathing, all vital signs were gone. I wrote the death certificate, but after 11 hours it turned out that the patient was alive.

"I can't explain it," she said. "If I had had any doubts about her being dead I would have called an ambulance and would have tried to resuscitate her. But she had no vital signs: no pulse, nothing."

The woman is now back home and is doing well, her niece said. "She does not recall anything as she is suffering from dementia," she said.

An investigation is now underway into the circumstances of the incident.

The properties in Chicago, Detroit, Miami, North Carolina, Puerto Rico — they took everything. My lawyer told me they couldn't take the money in the offshore accounts, and I had all my money stored in the Cayman Islands. But that's BS; they can take it. Take my word for it. If you got something, hide it, 'cause they can go to any bank and take it. ”

The D.A.'s office has good reason to consider the possibility of a wrongful conviction. The Tough on Crime mindset of the '80s and '90s produced many wrongful convictions, as we've learned in recent years, and every few weeks, it seems, there's a new headline about some poor guy getting exonerated after spending 20 or so years behind bars for a crime he didn't commit: folks like Eric Glisson, freed after 17 years; David Ranta, freed after 23 years; William Lopez, freed after 22 years; Anthony Yarbough and Sharrif Wilson, freed after 21 years; Derrick Deacon, freed after 24 years; and the list goes on. On top of those, there are the dozens more questionable convictions that Brooklyn D.A. Ken Thompson is currently reviewing.

The Vatican's economy minister has said hundreds of millions of euros were found "tucked away" in accounts of various Holy See departments without having appeared in the city-state's balance sheets.

In an article for the Catholic Herald to be published on Friday, Australian Cardinal George Pell wrote that the discovery meant overall Vatican finances were in better shape than previously believed.

"In fact, we have discovered that the situation is much healthier than it seemed, because some hundreds of millions of euros were tucked away in particular sectional accounts and did not appear on the balance sheet," he wrote.

"It is important to point out that the Vatican is not broke ... the Holy See is paying its way, while possessing substantial assets and investments," Pell said, according to an advance text made available on Thursday.

Pell did not suggest any wrongdoing but said Vatican departments had long had "an almost free hand" with their finances and followed "long-established patterns" in managing their affairs.

"Very few were tempted to tell the outside world what was happening, except when they needed extra help," he said, singling out the once-powerful Secretariat of State as one department that had especially jealously guarded its independence.

"It was impossible for anyone to know accurately what was going on overall," said Pell, head of the new Secretariat for the Economy that is independent of the now downgraded Secretariat of State.

    AUSTRALIAN OUTSIDER

Pell is an outsider from the English-speaking world transferred by Pope Francis from Sydney to Rome to oversee the Vatican's often muddled finances after decades of control by Italians.

Pell's office sent a letter to all Vatican departments last month about changes in economic ethics and accountability.

As of January 1, each department will have to enact "sound and efficient financial management policies" and prepare financial information and reports that meet international accounting standards.

Each department's financial statements will be reviewed by a major international auditing firm, the letter said.

Since the pope's election in March, 2013, the Vatican has enacted major reforms to adhere to international financial standards and prevent money laundering. It has closed many suspicious accounts at its scandal-rocked bank.

In his article, Pell said the reforms were "well under way and already past the point where the Vatican could return to the 'bad old days'."

Cheniere Energy Inc. (LNG) has found buyers for $2.5 billion in convertible notes that will help fund construction of its Corpus Christi, Texas, facility to export natural gas from booming U.S. shale production.

EIG Management Co. LLC and RRJ Capital II Ltd. will buy the notes, which can be converted into common stock in Cheniere, the Houston-based company said in two separate statements today. RRJ will have the right to transfer a portion of the $1 billion in notes it’s buying to Temasek Holdings Pte, Singapore’s state-owned investment company.

The Corpus Christi facility would be Cheniere’s second project, after Sabine Pass, to export natural gas from shale-rock formations. Gas producers are seeking new markets for the fuel as U.S. output reached a record 66.7 billion cubic feet a day last year. By cooling the gas to minus 270 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be reduced to a liquid state for shipment overseas by tankers.

“We are continuing to make progress on our Corpus Christi liquefaction project and expect to commence construction in early 2015,” Charif Souki, chairman and chief executive officer of Cheniere, said in the statements.

The announcement today marks the second investment in Cheniere by RRJ and Temasek, which joined forces in May 2012 to buy shares in the company for about $468 million. Temasek sold 9.2 million shares last year after the stock price tripled. Former Goldman Sachs Group Inc. partner Richard Ong runs RRJ with his brother Charles, who was previously chief investment officer for Temasek.

    Blackstone Investment

The latest investment will be from RRJ’s $3.6 billion second Asia fund, amassed last year after an initial pool of $2.3 billion raised in 2010. RRJ has offices in Singapore and Hong Kong, where most of its investment professionals are based.

Cheniere signed a 2012 deal for $2 billion in funding from Blackstone Group LP for the Sabine Pass terminal, which is under construction and would be the first to export U.S. shale gas.

Cheniere gained 1.1 percent to $72.82 at the close in New York. The shares have climbed 69 percent this year.
