Applying for a job at Google -


I interviewed for a software dev position at a smallish regional location that just recently opened.

Simply walking in the building was an amazing experience for me, fresh out of college.

I saw googlers pass by me in scooters and skateboards as I walked toward my interview room.

When I got to the interview room, I had to wait outside for a good 15 minutes at the top floor because someone was using the room for another interview.

At this point, the recruiter left me with my first interviewer and we just talked for a bit.

The interview room was on the top floor of a 6 story building.

It had a magnificent panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

Within eyesight, there was a room full of Legos which some googlers built magnificent structures. Think Legoland quality.

Next to that room was a room full of game consoles and big screen TVs that some googlers were using. Everyone seemed a bit hysterical in there, actually.

I asked my interviewer as a joke, “so does anyone actually do any real work, here"? He simply responded with a straightforward, “yeah, sometimes". I kinda got the impression that he was being serious.

When the door finally opened, two people walked out. One guy wore a tshirt, shorts, and flip flops. The other guy wore a full on suit and tie.

Before we started the actual interview, the interviewer said to me, “Hey thanks for dressing like a normal person. I swear, sometimes people come here, and they make me feel like I'm the one being interviewed.”

I had 2 more interviews before lunch.

Google provided me with an escort to take me to lunch. He took me to the cafeteria where they had an open buffet and beer on tap.

After getting an obscene amount of food, we went to their outdoor balcony area that also had a panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean.

We sat next to a bunch of people, and I enjoyed a nice conversation around everyone's interests.

At some point, someone asked me how I was enjoying my experience so far.

I said, “I love it, here. This building is amazing". In response, the guy across from me simply said in a very matter of fact way, “actually, it really isn't. They don't have nearly enough showers here. I bike here to work and I have to wait for a shower to open when I get to work.”

My escort simply facepalmed, then looked straight at me and said “My God, we have such first world problems here. One of the guys in my cubicle area is constantly complaining about how his big screen monitor is blocking his view of the ocean.”
