Hmm.... that may be doable...

I've built several laptops by canibalizing parts from various dead laptops... but I've always stuck to like models so everything would fit in the factory shell.

Honestly, some laptops may actually perform better in that configuration because of increased air flow.

I've already looked at modding a keyboard like that, and what I see on the screen makes me wonder if it really is a working version. Note the number of rows of keys... there's not enough for the number row, let alone the function row. Sure, you could put the numbers as caps over the qwerty row, but then you get no caps of those letters. Maybe if he added a separate keypad built out of an adding machine? Still leaves him short on a number of keys like control, tab, etc...

There are instructions on the net to make a regular mechanical keyboard interface with an electronic one, using sensors on each key... but I don't see the keys having enough movement to really work on this version.

Wink

The wind-up laptops will cost about $100 each when they come out. But I doubt they'll come with a morse-code key.

Remember the first "portable" PC ?

CompaqPortable

The Tandy TRS-80 Model 100, was the precursor of the laptop. It was not compatible with IBM DOS, but it worked....

It looks totally impractical but with a lot of design going retro nowadays why couldn't they design at least a keyboard with this kind of flair?

What is the $100 Laptop, really?
The proposed $100 machine will be a Linux-based, with a dual-mode display?both a full-color, transmissive DVD mode, and a second display option that is black and white reflective and sunlight-readable at 3? the resolution. The laptop will have a 500MHz processor and 128MB of DRAM, with 500MB of Flash memory; it will not have a hard disk, but it will have four USB ports. The laptops will have wireless broadband that, among other things, allows them to work as a mesh network; each laptop will be able to talk to its nearest neighbors, creating an ad hoc, local area network. The laptops will use innovative power (including wind-up) and will be able to do most everything except store huge amounts of data
