    OK,
Here's a bright idea that probably doesn't have much of a future, but it's interesting to think about anyway. If there were Super 8 cameras and projectors being built today, we would probably have a laser based optical sound system.
It could be made such that the audio signal could be electronically delayed a couple of frames, so that after the frame passes through the aperture, it would pass the laser scanner and the sound signal could be put right next to the correct frame, which would make editing a breeze. With the kind of signal densities available with this you could very likely put a digital stereo sountrack where the magnetic track belongs, on what we now consider to be a silent cartridge.

Disadvantages?, well yes the sound would be what it is since you could not re-record it. Don't decide you want to dub over a voice or add music. It could be a good medium to capture sound so after you finish editing the film, you could copy it off into a second digital system and do the audio work there.

At the very least it would be a real single system sound system and probably much higher in quality than the old magnetic one.

Pie in The Sky, of Course! Makes you think though!

    Good Idea!

We could also look forward to "modules" that slapped on the side of the camera and offered a shooter many different options on the camera...just like the Bell Howell MS45 and MS65, that came out in 1980.
