My uncle was telling me, back in the 60's. when he was taking slides, the camera he had didn't have a light meter...he had to go by the film box instructions, the camera book, and the situation at hand, and he is just a holidays-only type of picture taker. I like having cameras with light meters, but I also want to pay attention to what the light meter says, so I can kind of develop a feel for what f-stops are required in different situations.

What you described would be placing skin (Caucasian) on Zone VI.
That is exactly the right place to place skin on the Zone system gray scale.

No. What he described would place it in Zone V.

Even with a light meter there are going to be times when you have only one chance to get the shot, and it comes out all wrong. Without a light meter those times are going to be more frequent.
