It is small town of maybe a thousand people. It still has an one-room school and all the families are farming people. That is not to say there are not modern things in the town. Yes, there is a general store, but the farmers do have cars, and trucks and there is television. However, when the village was founded back in the 1850's there was none of these modern things. The farmers made their own entertainment, which was almost always two men beating the crap out of each other. The farmers soon realized however that the loser of the fight could not work on their farm, and no one wanted to see any farm family go hungry or worse. The men should decided that it would be smarter to have their women fight, so that was way it happened.
Over the decades the rules became standard for the fights. Any male would challenge another family to a fight. If that family agreed then it would be decided which female members would fight, what kind of fight they would have and attire for the fight. Then, the wives, daughters, sisters, mothers even grandmothers would fight, in front of the village. Soon, all the men built a large building for the fights. They put in a ring, a pit, a cage and in back was a large field and a pond.
The two families would bet on the fights, with a winner take all purse and of course the crowd would have their own bets. Also with the females were over the age of sixteen the loser would go with the winners for the weekend (all fights took place on a Friday evening) and sometimes the male who made the challenge would have to go for the weekend also. If the fighters were under sixteen the loser would not have go with the winners.
Although no one kept records, the fights seemed to be 75% catfights, 10% fistfights. 5% boxing, 5%wrestling and 5% sex fights.
There were also fights to death, some by design and some by accidents

My wife and i love this idea, although i know shed secretly be volunteering herself and "daughters" in this scenario to convince me to agree to deathfights, just for the fun of it
