    Fog of War Short Story

    Part I

We’ve been on this Forward Operating Base (FOB) in the middle of the desert since we arrived boots on ground nine months ago with three more to go to complete our tour of duty. The war in Iraq has been going for two years and we are now finally seeing a surge of troops pushing through to go north of the berm (Iraq-Kuwait border). Our job has been to provide security for US troops moving in and out of the combat theater. Everyone is going into or out of the hot zone except us. We are on the edge of the battle space where little happens or as I like to call it “next door to the war” in our AO (area of operations). I’m not going to be telling any war stories at the VFW after this tour. A thankless, tiring job of moving troops 24/7 to and from the Kuwait City airport to their staging camps out in the middle of the desert. The good thing is its 110 degrees by 7am and 121 by 10am. Just make it until the sun goes down is a long term goal that I look forward to everyday. Actually, the real good thing is I expect to bring everyone home unless some idiot on the highway does something really stupid to one of our convoys. So on another day just like all the others with the brown desert, brown sky, First Sergeant Myst walks in an reminds me that the entire unit needs to go to the medical tent for flu shots. “Lets go, Sir move your sorry ass or we will never get out of this country without having 100% GO on flu shots to clear medical. “ As the commander of a security force company I am expected to lead by example. This applies to flu shots as well.

We jump into 1SG’s HUMVEE (Delta 7) and roll to the medical tent. Some of my 180 SECFOR (Security Force) bubbas are in line, some will stop by when they get back from convoy escort missions. Standing and waiting in lines is an art form during a deployment. The medical staff is very relaxed so they don’t mind my men joking and bullshitting while they wait for their shots. I notice my men start to turn their heads and stand up a little straighter as a two navy Corpsmen work on giving the shots. I am seeing nothing but a sea of DCU’s (desert camouflage uniforms) and brown t-shirts as they take of their DCU jackets to get their shot. I notice the guys start to communicate with their eyes so as to not raise attention. This silent communication begins to travel down the line until it reaches the 1SG and myself. Not really sure what is up 1SG Myst does a little inspection of the line telling the men to straighten up and quiet down so the medical staff can do their job. The line settles down but the eyes are still alerted to something. 1SG Myst comes back to me after his little recon and tells me the two navy Corpsmen giving the shots are drop dead gorgeous. I didn't even see him turn his head or look in their direction, he must have seen them out of the corner of his eye. As the line continues to move I watch the reaction of the men as the men move closer to getting their shots. Some are trying not to stare and some are not concerned about being obvious in their staring. Each man is clearly pleased to be having shot administered by such attractive corpsmen. The Corpsmen are very professional and are very efficient in moving the soldiers along. They completely disregard the fact that they have twenty sets of eyes glued to their every move. As the First Sergeant and I move closer I notice that their Navy DCU's perfectly fit their shapely bodies. Almost as if they have had the tan camouflage uniforms tailored to form fit. I am also realizing that under those DCU's are smoking hot bodies with curves in all the right places. If you notice how hot their bodies are wearing DCU's they must really be something. Your mind really wanders when you are waiting in long endless lines and my mind is trying to figure out what is under those DCU's.

    PART IB
It's been a long nine months and my thoughts easily flow to soft supple breasts and hard erect nipples just underneath their issued uniforms. As we get even closer I am able to glance at their name tapes without being noticed. The tall blond with wonderful curves is Corpsman Satin. Very efficient and almost flirty with the guys but not over the top. Just enough to keep them happy as they pass by for their shots. Beautiful smile that just does not stop and eyes that light up and make you want to melt in front of her. The name of the other Corpsman is "Play." You've got to be fucking kidding me. The navy sends us a drop dead gorgeous corpsman by the name of "Play". I'm thinking I would play with you like there was no tomorrow. She is a little shorter, dirty blonde and very spunky with a killer body. If I had to guess she seems like she would be the spark to get the party started. She is very comfortable with all of these soldiers around and is not so concerned about showing her flirty side. She is teasing and joking with all the guys and they love it. Most of the guys are just stunned at the sight of two beautiful females and are enjoying the moment before going out on another convoy escort mission. All the guys are very polite and appreciative of the corpsmen's relaxed and fun attitude. Finally I'm next for my flu shot. The First Sergeant and I are the only two left in the medical tent with the two Corpsman as all the men have left to go on another mission. Sometimes it pays to be last. I walk up to Satin and turn my right arm to her expecting to get a shot and a quick " ba bye." She looks at me and asks if I have been properly hydrating. I told her that I had been and that I drink a full bottle of water every day. She looked at me like she did not believe me. Meanwhile First Sergeant Myst is being checked over by Corpsman Play. I'm trying not to look but she seems to be really giving him the once over. She reaches for his arm and almost caresses his bicep as she looks to find a spot to administer the shot. Just at that moment Satin asks Play if she thought I looked a bit dehydrated and if maybe she should administer an IV. Play said "well he does look a bit scrawny compared to the First Sergeant here..maybe we need to keep him for observation." Satin replies "maybe we should just to be safe." Satin asks First Sergeant Myst if he has been making sure his Captain has been hydrating properly. First Sergeant Myst replies that he tries to tell me to hydrate more but that I am a dumb shit who generally disregard his suggestions. Only a First Sergeant with the years of service as 1SG Myst could ever get away with calling his commanding officer a dumb shit. I try not laugh, but unfortunately he is right. I can be hard headed and he is usually right about things. Satin says "so you don't listen to the advice of your First Sergeant..what kind of commander are you? If you don't properly hydrate how do you expect your men to follow your example? Then the medical staff has to clean up your mess!" WOW..she's really busting my balls. I look out of the corner of my eye and 1SG Myst has a shit eating grin on his face loving every moment of my ass chewing by this drop dead gorgeous Navy Corpsman. I'm starting to shrink a bit when Satin jabs me with the needle. Ouch. Didn't see that coming. Play gives 1SG Myst his shot and almost humps his leg in the process. Satin thanks 1SG Myst for trying to look out for his dumb ass commander. Now everyone is calling me an dumbass. Play is cleaning and dressing (slowly) 1SG Myst's boo boo and Satin tosses me an band aid to apply myself. Well I can see where the love is here. First Sergeant made out like a bandit and I got called a dumb ass. All for not drinking enough water. Go figure. After another short lecture from Dr Satin on the importance of proper hydration and "don't let me see your sorry ass back here again..especially for dehydration" 1SG Myst and I walk out of the clinic. He has a very content look..I think he copped a feel from Play when I wasn't looking. I said in spite of the ass chewing and being jabbed in the arm with a sharp needle that was a rather pleasant experience. " I really wouldn't mind being treated for hydration by Corpsman Satin or Play in spite of the beating I took." First Sergeant Myst looked at me, thought for a moment and said "Sir, I will take that as a direct order."
