The lighter colors are the areas of higher ratiation. Just like a lightbulb. The bulb itself is what is producing the most radiation, therefore gives off the most light. The UV photographs are the same, but the camera only sees the UV radiation, rather than the visible light. The blue color is then added to allow easier viewing.

    It is rather spectacular though.

Differential rotation is not actually self-evident in that particular pic, sorta(?) as differential rotation relates to the fact that the body of the sun rotates at various speeds dependant upon how far towards the poles you actually are, differentiated from the equatorial speed.

If I remember it correctly the equatorial speed of rotation is slightly faster then the polar speeds, hence the sun literally twists upon itself.

These motions are seen as being involved as the progenitor of the magnetic fields that are visible in this pic, as it is currently theorized that it is that self-same differential rotation that is causing the major magnetic field of the sun to become twisted upon itself, and then produce the smaller magnetic fields that are clearly visible in that pic.

The magnetic fields are the items that produce the appearance of the Sun spots that had been observed by Galileo.

I thought Felicity's Clothes Press was shown in Felicity's Surprise on page 33. The Work Gown is also shown in Felicity's Surprise, but the colors are different. The candlestick from her Nighttime Necessities are also shown in Felicity's Surprise on pages 52 and 53.
