I have two Altec 808-8A horn drivers, and I was wondering how I can tell if the diaphragms are original symbiotic or an aftermarket replacement.

    Thanks!

The original diaphragm in an 808-8A was model# 21545, it's the old style with screw-on lugs, the later model was a 34726, Dave.

Generally, aside from it's red/brown translucent surround, factory symbiotic's will be stamped on the underside of the mounting hub with a five digit part number beginning with a 2 or 3(i think mostly 3 for symbi's) and a manufacturer ID and date in the form of a 6 digit number beginning with "391".

The older ones with screw type terminals usually have "L1" stamped near one of the terminals.

Radian is the only maker of a phragm similar in appearance that i'm aware of, but there could surely be others. The radian surrounds i'm familiar with have been semi-clear, or off white and usually have a radian stick on label on the hub.

Thanks for the info, it looks like I have the symbiotic diaphragms. I also have a set of 802-8g drivers, they sound much better. I'm going to start another post to find out if there is a way to get better sound out of the 808-8a drivers.
