    Altec 417 - Ebay

Does GPA have a correct re-cone kit?

P.S. Magnarc, do you know the prices 417 types sell for in Australia?

    Never seen them here.

Always plent on eBay. I'd go for the later one with the black magnet.

There is mention on the GPA website of them making 417-8H new in their Classic Series. I don't know what they used for a cone, and haven't laid eyes on one, maybe worth a call to them, maybe AB has some insight.

GPA can recone 417 no prob. NOS kits still wander the net. Am not sure about 16 ohm.

    Re: Altec 417 - Ebay

Thanks for the info. I will be building a 'very clean' sounding basic 40W guitar amp for a local pro musician and thought the 417 would be a good match.

Maybe a 421-8H would be another contender?

Not the 421- the 418. 421 is for bass guitar.

Lightbulb Re: Altec 417 - Ebay

That one looks crazy bad. Way back in 2002 I was buying up
417 frames and having GPA recone them; sent 8 at one time.
Great kits, obviously... The Real Deal. Old, used..Speakers' and complete kits
are usually dead in my experience. And it is a pain to ship them back and or deal
with EPays dispute process. That auction has the first edition frame, out of the 4
that were made, I like the second Alnico the best. The third has the large
heavy Black Magnet cover is my least, because it is difficult to get into
open back combo amps and are as heavy as the final Ferrite, Ceramic versions.
The Ceramic 417s and 917s are cool; because you do not need to worry
about the magnets having issues and the vc gap is a bit wider. So less worry
of VC rub if you over exert or drive them.. with in common sense reason.
    I may be wrong!
