It's probably reasonable to assume that the speaker was 'voiced' with them this way, so any coupling would be accounted for in the final tweaking.

How did you make out with your new XOs. Please let us know what you hear.

Hi Don, the Xovers have been in for a few weeks now and I'm thoroughly enjoying them. A great improvement over the stock Xovers. Plus I like the fact that I'm not putting my original HF Frams at risk with an original set of dividing networks that are series to boot. I'm using 604c's in a matched pair of 606 corner cabinets. This is the perfect marriage of 604c and cabinet. GPA did a great job on an affordable quality Xover. I'm sure there are other higher end Xovers that better deal with the time alignment and offer mid EQ and Hi adjustment. But overall great value and result for the money! I'm amazed at the 3D imaging the 604's present. Mono recordings truly are a Wall of sound. Color me a happy camper until I can find a set of plans for a time aligned crossover I can build.

Do you have a schematic of your final XO ?
I would like to see a copy , if I may.
You could check the delay on your present XO. All passive XOs have some delay. The delay is caused by the coils in the low frequency path. The more mH s , the more delay. The test signal on my web site, can be used to verify the proper delay. It can show the woofer to horn electrical delay by playing the test signal, and displaying the signals out of the XO on a dual trace scope , trigger the scope on the XO input signal.

I drew this schematic of the GPA N1600-16 crossover. The problem is that I couldn't measure the inductors as I would have to dissect them and at 300 bucks for the pair I wasn't willing to do that.

If you want to try to get the time delay right, I suggest building a L F section and test with your present H F section.
Cradeldorf provided us with a schematic for a N1600-16, is that the one you are using?
OK, we need L F impedance data with and with out the Zobel. I think a sweep ( or spot freqs 400 Hz, 800 , 1500, 2000, and 4000 Hz ) would do.
It looks like 18 Ohms R and 10 uF cap would be a good start for a Zobel. Also check the woofer's DCR (14.4 ?).

Re: Time Aligned Crossover for a 604c

Donald, the crossover I am using is one that was designed, built and sold by GPA for the 604 16ohm series speakers. IT is a passive parallel network that addresses the midrange hump (shout) of the 604 and although not a true time aligned xover it does offer (according to them) better timing than the stock network. There was no schematic supplied with the xover. In the near future I plan on laying it out.

If they designed it for the 604E with the accordion surround which has a Fs of around 27hz and your running your 604C's which have the half roll paper surrounds. I'm not sure what the Fs is on yours is, but both of mine measured around 53Hz... Mine sounded dead and lifeless with those crossovers. Glad to hear your happy with them though. If you ever get adventurist feel free to toss a pair of these together and give em a try. They really brought my C's alive.

    Pat
If you are willing to make some measurements , I will try a design for your 604s.
    We need
    Re DC resistance
    Le VC inductance
    Zobel R & C
Load impedance of woofer with Zobel.
    build a prototype
Test for proper time delay. If we guessed right , build the high pass

By the way , where are you?

Re: Time Aligned Crossover for a 604c

As time has passed and I have logged many hours on the 604c's with GPA crossovers I have found areas of flaw. Although a nice crossover, it's just not THE crossover for the 604c. Certain recordings sound magical (vocals especially) but when we get into modern rock with busy bass passages it just gets a bit muddled.. also at times the horns are a bit shouty! and it seems that the horn resonance can rear it's ugly head on some recordings. Overall a nice crossover, but I think it was designed more for the later 604's and not specifically for the 604c.

Currently working on some mods.. will post later the results.
