Just my .02 in lieu of a better, practical solution, the McGuyver in me would probably be reaching for the scissors and various thicknesses of suitable materials and "feeling" out the proper thickness. Too thick will force the coil/former out of round, too thin won't uniformly center the assembly.

It's not really rocket science, you're just looking for concentricity between the gap and former/coil.

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I can find something. Some tutorials say glue the spider to frame and surround to frame at the same time, others say spider to frame first. I can see the former being much easier. If the glue isn't too fast, get the wires oriented, smooth both into the glue, apply glue for gasket and apply, then flip over to let dry. I'm hoping nothing slips, and the shims keep the VC height correct as well as centered. I've heard 2 coats of clear "dope" on the cloth transition is enough.

    Re: Reconing 419's with 414.

As it turns out, my first recone was successful. Had a scare as it was very scratchy on bass peaks at first. Turned out to be caused by config problems on the minidsp-miniamp, plus need for a more robust power supply. Just got it all sorted yesterday after putting it aside for a couple months. Now I'll tackle the other one.
BTW it turns out the efficiency mismatch between the 511's and the 414's requires cutting the horns back to the point that with 20wpc out from the minidsp/miniamp stack, max output was only 80db. So ditching the miniamp and using a 125wpc class D amp from Swan.
