    Re: Altec N-800-D Crossover

Thats my same crossover. Says Designed to operate from 8 ohms or 16 ohms. Did they mean you can run the N-800D at 8 or 16ohms (Amp wise) or did they mean you could attach 8 or 16 ohm speakers to the crossover? Thanks Rick

Amp wise... The crossovers are already part of the speaker system..

    Hi AB,

It seems to "me" the ALTEC people are saying " use this crossover with either 8 or 16 Ohm drivers, and it will work OK. "

I am just a newbie, but I read that ALTEC was often not too fussy about designing a crossover with internal parts specifically for a certain driver Z. They would use it with 8 or 16 Ohm drivers, no matter!

Please feel free to correct me if I am off base here. (So I will lean !!) I most humbly question your response to johnny_fever in this instance. Thanks a lot.

Urban legend. While it might ring true for a speaker model here or there, it certainly was NOT a blanket practice. You CANNOT safely assume component values by crossover model alone. The networks were most definitely "tweaked" for some speaker systems, and there is no, or very little existing documentation to support this. But, once you have seen enough original Altec systems it becomes obvious that the Altec engineers knew a lot more than they left behind documentation to prove.

There's not much to dig. You can find the basic circuit diagrams, and base designs for most of the networks. But likely the data for which specific components were used in which crossovers for which speaker systems is probably long gone, purged with the heaps of records and documentation that were destroyed sometime around the move from Anaheim to OKC. Most of the intimate details of the networks comes from hands on experience with multiple Altec speaker systems over time.

What makes this even more confusing/frustrating is when people intending to do good deeds post a circuit drawing for an N800-F network, but don't tell you which speaker system it has come from. I can tell you from first hand experience that an N800-F from a 1967 846A valencia does not contain the same value components as an N800-F from a 1975 9844 monitor.
