I will change all electrolytics later on but still sound great with Altec 416 and JMLC horns. Only complaint I have is that it creates a thump during power off. I probaly need to solder a 0.001 uF 1kV ceramic cap in between neutral and hot (no GND on this old amp)to solve the problem. But for $35, its a winner! There's another tube amp that I borrowed and sound very good on Altecs. I am searching for it and will report once I got hold of one. Don't wanna go to a bidding war on Ebay
That sounds like Walmart pricing, nice one.
Try a 100K to 200K resistor across the filter caps. It'll bleed off the residual voltage and eliminate the shut down thump.

Thank you for the suggestion! I will install one once I have the chance to play with the amp again. Thanks once more!

Very impressed, AB. It is rated at 73WPC into 8ohms, and sounds like it has way more headroom than that. It drives the 416s like I've never heard before. Now that I'm back using the old Onkyo, it sounds really crappy by comparison. I really need to find some time to put it on the bench; otherwise I may just need to send it off somewhere for repairs. Any suggestions on a great shop?

Any good Electronics repair shop close by you should suffice... You don't want to get into too much shipping costs, as you will soon be past its own value..

I finally bough some 300B's for my amps.
    Electro Harmonix gold grid.
    So far so good.
Nice to have the big amps back in the system.

OK, I'm reviving this dead ol' thread.
I recently scored a very nice Altec 9444A/SA - this thing is super clean and I got it for less than $90.
The amp has loads of clean power and sounds pretty good. I need to pull out my pre-amp and see how it goes.

I'm still using mine hooked up direct. I really need to clean the pots, Though.
