What amplifers are you using with your Altec gear?

I do not know if this question has been asked before on the forum...

I'm very curious about the subject.

I myself have found the best sound of my current amp gear to be a bottlehead stereomour 2A3 tube amp for my Altec 604e's in DIY 612 cabs...

What amps are you guys using with your Altec gear? - and with what type of speakers?

PS: if this has been thoroughly discussed/talked about elsewhere please let me know...

Re: What amplifers are you using with your Altec gear?

I've got a simple system. I'm using an Altec 9444A connected to a Sony DVD player, and I'm currently driving Jensen TR10U Triette speakers. I don't have a pair of large theatre speakers, only a single late model Duplex/Engine and a pair of small home speakers (Monterry) that I haven't had hooked up in a while. So basically the only thing Altec currently in use is the amp.

A7s in the hometheater/casual listening room have a Simaudio integrated amp powering them. The other room, all analog with an Oracle TT and 604-8Ks have a Jolida 801 propelling the music.

I'm partial to the Bottlehead gear!

    Bottlehead Foreplay III Preamp.
    Bottlehead Paramount SET Monoblocks (2A3)

    Speaker Components:

Low Frequency: Altec Lansing 416-8B 15"drivers
High Frequency: Altec Lansing 802-8G (tangerine) mounted to an 811B sectoral.
Crossover: Altec N1201-8A (1200Hz) with bypassed HF/MF controls.

    Speaker Cabinets:

Custom 270L port tuned to 32Hz made out of 1" MDF. Braced, T-Nuts, Spiked, with a half bag of non-mixed concrete in the bottom of each :-) "kid friendly", non-scuffing cloth.

Re: What amplifers are you using with your Altec gear?

    Hi again!

    Thanks for sharing !

This was for me really interesting. From the ones that has answered it looks for me that the largest Altec speaker systems is usually matched with transistor based amps.

A lot of you are using the Altec 9444A power amp. I knew that Altec made amps - but never looked into them...

Smaller series, like the duplex, has mostly tube amps...
Both amps with 300B and 2A3 tubes are used. The Quad II monoblocks is also mentioned here.

    Cool !
