well the one with the rub is going to Bill for a recone. i just need to get it boxed up and off to the post office. now i need to build an 8254 box and a pair of boxes for the 411s and a pair for the 420s and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

When ever doing a recone IMHO I think it is best to do both woofers so they will sound the same..Same goes for replacing diaphragms you should always do them in pairs..But then you run into a catch 22 as most folk's like to keep their original cones original...Originally Posted by Phil-G

here's a questian. i know that speakers are rated in watts and dbs. but there has to be an accurate way of measuring and describing the actual force a low bass speaker exerts on its environment. like a drywall crack test. or maybe the progressive picture frame knock off.
all kidding aside what can i expect with these in an 8256 cabinet?

Hmm, when we spoke about this, the 3154s would go in the 8254 and the 3156s in the 8256, which is much larger, so peak performance could theoretically suffer enough to maybe damage the 3154s at high power.
Note too that these cabs are tuned high [55-60 Hz IIRC], so will only fill in below the A7's horn roll off unless tuned lower, which in turn reduces power handling below ~70-80 Hz.
In stock form, the 8254 will theoretically peak at ~121 dB/m, the 8256 at 124 dB/m IIRC and in my '52 G.I. tract, stick built, floating floor home, the ceiling literally rained down on me in the listening room and virtually all drywall seams were cracked in the rest of the house to a greater or lesser extent on a sustained 16 Hz organ pipe fundamental at around 120 dB.
There's folks on HT forums that are hitting higher SPLs without damage, but they are brick and/or concrete block and/or poured wall construction on poured slabs and have well done sound isolation constructed inner walls.

sorry GM i kinda mixed up the 8256 and 8254 numbers. they look similar.oh yeah, i intend to use the proper cabs. didnt realize the 8254 was different/smaller. and after looking it up, sure nuff. >without bracing< the 8254 comes in around 8.5 CF and the 8256 around 9.9. of course i may not be doing the calc right.
that's pretty bad GM. i don't suspect this 1970 jim walter would fare much better.
