    The center channel is mono, so one speaker and just one crossover. That $75 Behringer needs 5 XLR to RCA adapters @ $6 each to really be complete. The kit needs a $25 power supply...so no simple cheap options.

    The speaker is in the house. Boy, for a mere 25.5x25.5x31 inches, this thing is pretty huge. I took off the hanging hardware, planing on putting the TV on top, but maybe I should have hung it from the ceiling instead. I notice that the box is not made from Baltic Birch plywood as advertised, but actually Chip board and the perforated metal screen rattles something fierce when tapped (have to back it up at all available places with foam weather strip).

    I also will place two 1x4 strips of wood and four wheels to roll it around and flip it upside down to let the woofer sag in the opposite direction then what it has lived with for the last 40 years. I will swap out one the morphodite 418 speakers and fire it up tomorrow to see what it will do.

    Yes it is big, but smalled than an 825/828.

    It's branded something like "Enviroboard" according to a former Altec employee on the board. I think the chips are a little smaller than standard OSB, but way better than particle board in my opinion. OSB is actually supposed to be rated similarly to plywood, for construction.

    I removed the metal grill on mine.

    Care to share some pictures of your setup? I'm interested to see how someone fits a 9864-8A into their system.

    Re: 9864-8a on ebay.

    Here you go, just imagine everything cleaned up, the 418's and the box-of-subs (actually in two separate 1.45 cubic foot cabinets), pulled out into an arc equal to the front of the 9864-8A, with the turn table 12 feet away in the bedroom (Is that to far for RCA cables without a booster?) and eventually a 7 foot Baldwin grand piano in front of everything. Edit: the patch wires at one time really where cleaned up, but... Luckily I have a wife that got used to me when I had the A7's hooked up, so this is pretty tame.

    Audio by Goodwill, I want to thank you personally for steering me toward this speaker. What a great find and thank you very much. It just seems a great shame to relegate this unbelievably great sounding speaker to video dialog, I would buy a bunch more for the right price.

    My son suggested that Wifey and I should start a reality show called Speaker Hunters, but I bet there are a slug of members on this site that deserve that honor much more than I.

    The 9864-8A sounds wonderful, lots of bass and plenty of treble, and with a Piezo super tweeter, would rival anything I have heard. It's efficiency is lower than the 418-8H II's and 802-8D/32B's but I have plenty of watts.

    Also, now imagine the 9864-8A flush into the wall in an external alcove/dog house, with the 418's built into these;

    Just think, no defraction...

    I see you have the same problem I have...... TV in front of a window!

    Your welcome. The cabinet may not be perfect with it's parallel walls, but I think it sounds pretty good.

    love the rabbit ears.
    three 15" woofers. that has to move the wood frame a bit.

    Re: 9864-8a on ebay.

    Well crap, after much trial and error, and hours on the internet, I have concluded that there is not any way to get 5.1 audio from a blu-ray player without a HDMI cable input A/V receiver. The HDMI to HDMI to 5.1 component audio extractor only sends a two channel signal as also does the Samsung Blu-ray player through the coaxial audio out port (Actually can't get any sound whatsoever so far). Something to do with copyright collusion between the movie industry, blu-ray, and audio/video receiver manufacturers. I am now looking at another extractor that claims to support Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD that the blu-ray is spitting out. For right now, I am going to hook up the 9864-8A with a 501-8A 500hz crossover.
