    Red face Altec Valencia ?????????

Hallo to all you guys !!!!
    I'm new in your community.
I have inherited from my uncle these speakers. As far as I remember he bought them in the late '60s, beginning of '70s.
I do not know if they are worth restoring and if yes which are correct spares to buy.
Can you give me a helping hand to identify which model they are?
I have sought for pictures in many sites but I couldn?t match them up in a definitive way.
The cabinet dimensions are: centimeters 70 width x 50 depth x 75 height approximately.
The ID references of components inside are as follows:
    - speakers 416-8A
    - crossovers N801-8A
    - drivers 807-8A
    - horns 811 B
IMHO they should be Valencias, probably 846 A, but I'm not so sure because of black painting over the horn and the so many ambiguous views I found on the net.
Do an official catalog exist? In which official document can I find references and specs for my model?
I'd like also to know in which year they were manufactured...
thanks in advance for your valuable opinions .... Any information will be greatly appreciated!!!!

They look like 846A Valencias.. But the components look wrong to me.. For one they didn't come with Symbiotik Diaphragms..Those HF drivers have the Symbiotik labels on them so maybe 807's?

BTW - Welcome to the Altec User Board !

It may have gotten buried before he had a chance to see it.

It should be noted that the N-801 is not the correct XO for ANY model Valencia. N800-8K is the proper network for 8 ohm 846B/846U.

I also notice that all damping has been pulled from the cabnet, replacing it would be an instant sonic improvement.

    Re: Altec Valencia ?????????

I have a pair of 846A Valencia's that I purchased new in the 70's. The cabinets pictured are 846A's, however, I think all Valencia's were 16 ohm units (at least mine were) and came with 416-16Z woofers which were I believe a 416A-16 without the magnet cover. The HF drivers were 806A-16 ohms. I really can't remember the crossovers as sometime after the Walt Jung article on capacitors I rebuilt the crossover with Polypropylene Capacitors and air core inductors but I'm thinking the crossovers were not in a metal case/enclosure but potted in cardboard? Anyway as others have said what is pictured are 846A cabinets with newer non-original drivers. The 811's look to be correct ... they were black so that they didn't show through the grill.

Also the woofers have magnet covers..I don't think they came with magnet covers in the Valencias..However there could be a few exceptions. I also agree though they would have been the 416Z.

I think your right.Page 3 or 4 and with only 1 reply... Buried is right which is quite unusual for an Altec thread..

    Re: Altec Valencia ?????????

Early ones did(have a magnet cover and 416A decal), and whatever they called it before 846A Valencia, 846 Iconic i think, actually had the horns painted gold to hide them behind the gold toned grill fabric. The majority came with green horns and 416Z(green basket, no cover). Late 846A came with black horn, and black 806A, and 416-16Z(black frame no cover). 846B/846U came with 416-8A(black frame, large or small with magnet cover), 416-8Z(either frame no cover), and some late models had 416-8B's.

And of course you could buy the Valencia cabinet empty with a baffle and vent cut for a 604.

Might be a really good home brew set. Bracing in my Valencias is mitered in the corners that one has butt joints.

    Re: Altec Valencia ?????????

When I bought my 846A's in 1968 they came with the Bi-Flex in them as I didn't have the money for the correct drivers. I later had the right ones installed and the dealer gave me full trade in on the Bi-Flex drivers. My 416's have the magnet covers. I latter bought some 846B's and gave the A's to my niece as the cabinets were pretty beat up from all the moves.

Mine are 846B with 806-8A drivers and no magnet covers on the 416s. Xovers are N800-8K.

I think what you have are 846 or 846A, as mentioned above. Either way, definitely worth keeping and restoring.

    Have fun and welcome!
