    Re: that's a clean 604-B

604 w/1000 Hz XO is the rarest and in my limited experience the best performing mainly due to its best horn/woofer polar response matching. The downside and why the rest have 1500 Hz XOs is its too low usable power handling for post WWII apps.

With many high end 'full-range' drivers with nowhere near its performance costing >$2 k, this one's a 'steal' IMNSHO. If current GPA HF diaphragms will work, then all the better unless only spinning 78 rpm vinyl or listening to AM radio.

    Re: that's a clean 604-B

Certainly is a very clean unit. Well worth the asking price, as it has the XO.
Could be a reproduction cone installed, or may just be a well looked after example. Sure looks all original.
If so, very worth the price as the cones fail as you all have seen over time.

    Re: that's a clean 604-B

in the late 80s, a local equipment suppler,

had a 604B, for sale, in his shop.

    for $40 dollars.

    only 1, of course.

    they are excellent.

    that oil cap,

makes for most of the difference.

    not kidding.

a local equipment flipper,at that time, said,

you really need to get a better crossover.

he also sold used cars, so this was easily seen for what it was.

i read this when it first was published,

so i had an understanding of crossovers,

that even today, most people do not.

    so,

here it is, 41 years later,

Picking Capacitors - Walter G. Jung and Richard Marsh

this is also, why i build my own equipment, that i can't build myself.

    $$$$$$$$$

    -----------------------------------

a great deal of Japanese hifi,

    in the 50s, 60s, 70s,

    have oil inter-stage capacitors.

on facebook, the premiere source, of noob disinfo,

some guy showed where he removed/replaced some oil caps,

    from a reel to reel.

he showed a picture of the caps, said he thew them away.

Barnum said nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people

Phineas Barnum, seems to be the guiding light,

    of mass market publicity,

    in these modern times.

    Re: that's a clean 604-B

Yeah, been 'tooting this horn' all my audio enlightened life to mostly deaf ears with some folks telling me that certain modern design caps are superior to any PIO cap and one early audio BB banned me for recommending cheap PIO motor starter caps for [SOTA] 'HIFI' DIY speakers.

That said, using UL/CSA testing procedures, the old mil spec PCB caps we pulled from military surplus outperformed the then current vegetable oil motor starter caps, though when used in AR-1 listening tests we couldn't tell any difference, so learned early on that measurements isn't 'everything', just a frame of reference, at least in audio reproduction.
