Yeah, except for the parallel walls that can't be damped enough without screwing up its response, though using a 300 Hz XO like it was initially designed for mostly solves the problem.

'Steve Mac' did them up right by DIYing them expanding in both planes, then electronically time aligned 511E, super tweeter horn in mouth: Mid Bass Horn (80-800Hz)

Super Bad Cat [view 'stereo pic' 1-4]

A 'shootout' with one of DSL's larger Synergy horns would be interesting, though theoretically the latter should perform better overall, but my 'burning' question is would it be enough to justify all the extra time, cost, labor?

edit: AB, can all the info on his site be added for posterity to the Altec library?

When I look at that cabinet, I always feel like putting two cross members across the mouth to stabilize and break up resonances in those large side panels. 2x2s would do it.

Normally, the 'wings' do it, so without them they need [3] hardwood closet rods covered in thick felt or similar, though in both cases its necessary to either increase exterior horn panel thickness to ~2.25" or add [3] axial 2x4 braces on end IME and even then, considerable damping was required to mostly quell its parallel panel eigenmodes.

If you just want to mimic the 'wing's' bracing, a 2x8 x 2x4 'L' angle will theoretically do it.

Don't know what the minimum wood size is for sure, just know that I got excellent results with the scrap I had.

They really 'color' the sound otherwise, though after decades of even what little was left got to where it was sometimes too distracting, so will never again recommend/use a parallel wall horn except possibly a true 'sub'.

GM I will take a look and if I can I will... I don't think I can add the entire thread but will try to add the important information in it. Basically I only uploaded .pdf's and jpg's and data sheets to the Library.Currently looking into other hosting sites ATM... So I'm not sure if I should do it now or after a move if we move at all.. I have to get together with Todd on this... The most important thing is that we can import a copy of the Altec User Board database to a new server from 12/2002 till now 9/2015. IME we CAN NOT lose all the information in this forum as that would be disastrous for us.. From my chats with Steven IIRC he makes a back up of the database once a week..

Right now I'm using my Dropbox account for the Altec User Board Library..Once we have a new server or move the library to Todds site we will have a much larger storage capacity for the Library.I'll keep you in the loop.
