Altec 604-8Gs and GPA N604-8A crossovers

So I have been considering new crossovers for my stock Altec 604-8Gs. Since I have no skills I decided to pull the trigger on a pair of GPA N604-8A $60 ea new.

I cant seem to find anything on this pairing. Most people suggest the Jeff Markwart crossovers but they are beyond my abilities. So was wondering if anyone else has these GPA crossovers in their 604-8Gs.

The GPA crossovers are just copies of the stock Altec crossovers IIRC.And the crossover for the original 604-8G wasn't very good. You would be better off getting an active crossover (until you can find someone to build them for you). There are lots of folks on the web who will build them for you, some folks even do it for a living.Just ask around on the various audio forums and you should be fine..

    Here are some active crossovers..

    DCX-2496

Or this one is a good choice as well.

They were designed for the more modern GPA Model 604-8H-III
I am thinking they should be an upgrade .

I have never heard or used this crossover so I can't comment by experience..Everything Bill makes with regard to his drivers, speakers, diaphragms is of the utmost quality...So I shouldn't have really posted about them without the experience of using them..But I am almost positive that they are built from old Altec schematics..But for $60 you can't go wrong as that isn't a whole lot of money.I say go for it ! But I think you may like the Markwart crossovers better, just my opinion however.YMMV

Well that's even better as you can give us first hand experience of how this XO works/sounds.

Received the crossovers today. Packed well and received in a timely manner. I put them in the cabs and hooked up to speakers. Holy crap those drivers are heavy!!

I have to say they are definitely an improvement. First thing I noticed was a softer (less harsh) tone and better bass. They also give better stereo imaging. They sound very good.

Listening to music is more of being wrapped in a nice warm velvety blanket (techno talk, LOL!)

For a person like myself who has never soldered anything and cant read schematics these are definite value at $60 a piece.

I am pleased! This is really sounding nice. I understand that the crossovers will break in too. Nice!

    FYI- Accompanying equipment used.

Terp, what leads you to believe that crossovers need 'burning-in'??
Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.

Been told that the Capacitors burn in. No scientific evidence

Don't believe it. It is one of many audiophile myths(beliefs) that are regularly passed around by uninformed or misled people.

    A primer: Myths in Audio

Question for members. "Why do proponents of 'burn-in' invaribly claim an improvement, after it has been done, no matter what is the object of their attention"?
