Tomt,
That item number should have been #83 not #79. Apologies for my error.

Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.
This a censored version of the e-mail I sent my brother earlier today.
Finally got off my lazy rear and spent the weekend putting together the Markwart XOs when not watching the NFL. Slow going as I was lacking useful items such as cable tie downs, proper binding posts, and appropriate wood screws.
Finished them about 11pm last night, took a break, and then hooked them up. Sounded like ?bad word? so put the Altecs XOs back in and they still sound like ?bad word?.
?Very bad word? me three times I blew up the Altecs! ?Many bad words?!!!
I was pretty wiped out by this point and not thinking straight, but rechecked and double checked the XO carefully against the schematic.
All components appeared to be correctly connected, solder joints were solid. Grabbed an ohm meter and checked the speaker impedance's, numbers didn't make any sense. Reading were all over the place but not an open circuit. Grab a resistor as a reference and that was screwed up as well.
Discover that ohmmeter leads are totally ?bad word? up, useless, mocked up another pair, took new readings and the speakers are not blown! Thank dog!
Needed a break to think about what could be wrong when a thought came to me that I may have wired the spks. incorrectly, which was exactly what happened?
Anyways they are working properly now and sound different than the nearly stock XOs, more open, transparent, and a bunch of other ?bad word? that does not really matter as they need a significant amount of break-in time before the real listening begins, can't wait to get home tonight.
Never work late at night nor when tired.
Will post some pics of the rough XO later.
I built the same xovers about a month ago. They sound great. And they are sounding even better with more time on them
Yes lets see some pics!
Hey Guys,
Personally, I think that if we listen to a change long enough, our brain recalibrates what we hear and slowly we like it.
Unless of course the change is flat bad to listen to.
I know that I can listen to what I have in the player and love it one night, and pick it apart the next.
If Jeff hears his changes get better and attributes it to cap break in, more power to him! I'm not one to bash as it becomes as bad as arguing about religion.
I have a pair of 904-8A's that have been modified with GPA all alum phrams. I believe the woffer is slightly different than the 8K.
X-over is the same.
I once tried some fancy, popular caps that were reasonably expensive and the results were horrible. So back in went the stock caps and they have been in there since.
Thus ended my cap rolling experimenting. I just can't afford to buy hundreds of bucks worth of caps to find what I like better.
Here is something interesting.
Whether it's my 19's, my duplexes, or VOTT's I have had in the past, I prefer the dual shelved X-overs. The mids are just too hot with the old singles. If I turn the level down, the highs disappear. Speaking of the singles here.
In all these cases, I run the MF level nearly at min and the HF level in the optimum area.
I don't need to tell you guys why Altec made the dual shelved x-overs......
And yeah, I have pots in mine. And yeah they are a pain in the butt. But, I like the fact that I can smidge them around a bit depending on the source material.
The one thing we can't control is how the recording engineer mixed the music.
So call them tone controls! I don't have any in my system.......no bass knob, treble knob etc.
Keep up the good work guys.
This is fun stuff!

Some pics of the Markwart XO. Teflon bypass caps will be added shortly, also the layout may change, suggestions welcomed.
Nice! Its good to see someone else using motor run caps on their Markwart's xovers. I really like how mine sound.
