Does the trapezoidal shape contribute to the sound of a single box sonically, or is the purpose for arranging arrays?

hello abg, from what little i know about the physics and the behavior of large cone loudspeakers,i believe the trapazodial shape of the speaker enclosure would prevent or at least help minimize the reproduction or occurence of any standing wave audio frequencies that might be induced in that particular enclosure size(read dimensions)(hence also the use of insulation or dampening material in speaker enclosures) and the trapazodial shape does conveniently arrange in a horizontal array that would physically form an arc.(and there could be problems develop from that) i know that there are more knowledgeble individuals on here that might chime in.

Exactly this. All the product info we received (when I still worked in ProSound) always touted the trapezoidal cabs for the ease of constructing point-source arrays. The control of standing waves was rarely mentioned and was included almost as an afterthought.

Of course, point-source arrays have been all-but abandoned now in favor of line arrays, but the trapezoidal cabinets are still needed to achieve the proper "curve" of the line.

Wonder what the next big advancement will be?

These are much closer, but I don't think 210 cabinets are what I really want/need in my little livingroom, right now.

Yes, I saw that....... I even checked with a friend that drives a truck to see if he was going out that way......didn't sound promising.

I take it you haven't been keeping abreast of all the [new] DSL products that are slowly, but surely, switching folks back to point source arrays and 'all-in-one' systems.

You're right, GM. I've been out of the business for over a decade. But I still receive a couple of the trade magazines, and every time there is a feature article on an installation it's likely to be done with line arrays still - and lots of info on the digital manipulations incorporated into them. I've often wondered what will happen down the line when that digital gear gets old, superseded, unavailable updates, etc.. I'm just old and pessimistic, but it seems to me that a simple point source arrangement without the need of extensive "management" makes the most sense in the long run. Danley's article appeals to me .

having been to a fair amount concerts and church with a line array sets. im pretty sure the only place they work correctly is in a lab. all the digital correction in the world will not make up for a less than gifted sound tech or the original designer himself.
