I think you done good. Gotta love a happy ending.
i just got this pair today. i bid on them late one night. the next day i looked at the auction and saw where he stated the ohm reading measured at 13 and 9 ohms. i was like oh crap they're fried. i spent the next week hoping someone would outbid me. long story short it never happened.
Altec Lansing 419A Biflex Pair Vintage Speaker | eBay
today i got home and saw the box on my step, i did the slow walk and took them inside. just for grins i hooked them up and both played fine. they actually sound pretty good, without a cabinet even. i just did an ohm check and both read 4.7, guess i dodged a bullet on this one.
moral of the story is; never bid on anything after 6 beers and a shot of rum.
i do really like the boxes though.

It took me a while to learn about drinking and decision making. You can do both. But, there's a proper order. If you're not careful you'll end up like i was, married to, and in love with a woman you hate.
Altec saved me. It was during the build of a pair of 828 cabinets, actually the filling and painting process that she decided to take issue with my interest level in the hobby. The ensuing debate that quickly devolved into the utterance of an ultimatum that referred to "all those damn speakers and amplifiers or me!"
The 828's are still here, and loved.
