Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.

A shame the author didn't know that RCA34633 is the part number for the REPLACEMENT CONE ASSEMBLY only and is not the woofer per se.

    Re: Model 14 Review

"RCA" stands for "ReCone Assembly", if memory serves, not Radio Corporation of America.

    Re: Model 14 Review

Did they just revise this article? I just read it today and it now states "The Model 14 uses a 12″ Altec Lansing low frequency transducer (it was never given a model number, but the cone kit is RCA34633) to reproduce the range between 35 Hz and 1.5 kHz. It is sometimes mistakenly thought to have been manufactured by RCA due to the part number of the cone kit."

It's a pretty good, honest review. As a Model 14 owner, I enjoyed parts 1 & 2 and am now waiting for them to post the final part--part 3. It had multiple links to Altec specs etc., I saved a few and added them to my collection....

    Re: Model 14 Review

The facts to the best of my knowledge:

Casual/OEM part number for the model 14 woofer is 34633

Altec factory inventory number for the model 14 woofer 50-03-034633

EDIT: When contemplating the "RCA" prefix also consider the "CR" prefix used by JBL for their replacement cone assemblies. For example if you bought a factory assembly for your 8 ohm 2226 woofer, you received a CR2226H. For those not familiar with JBL suffix letters, it's simple. G = 4ohms H = 8ohms J = 16ohms, and this applied to the actual drivers as well as the recone kits.

    Nice Clarification,

I noticed the correction and didn't think much of it other than the author must be a regular on the Host Board or know Todd personally.

I am happy that the site is reporting on some classic loudspeakers. It is a bit of a trend right now, but the exposure will hopefully bring the industry to explore what is missing from newer designs (Tone and dynamics).

Can't wait for the Model 19 review.

I don't look at that email very much anymore - send me a PM here and I will give you my personal email address.

I've contacted Todd via his Great Plains Audio email address requesting his assistance and guidance regarding future articles, beginning with the Model 19. Bill Hanuschak was very helpful in the restoration of the Model 14s we're using as our test monitors for parts of the series of articles. Also, Altec fans in the Atlanta area have been kind enough to loan us Model 19s and Valencias.

It's our hope that by documenting this information it will make it easier for others to learn about, and get the most from their classic loudspeaker systems.

If anyone else would like to help with the project, it would be greatly appreciated.

I apologize if anyone felt that they were not given credit for information that was gleaned from this forum. Our intent was not to claim credit but to document information. At no point was anyone at Audiophile Nirvana given credit for the information. It was merely a compilation of facts (as best we understood them). The article will be continually updated with new information as it's uncovered.

As a Model 19 owner, I'm really looking forward to that review as well. Please share the link here when it's published.
