Wow, pretty sweet looking, reminds me a bit of Bob Carvers Silver Sevens. I'd sure hate to have to retube those things.
Let us know how it sounds, some how I think you will have more than enough power.

IMHO, The best sounding tube amp, on a well-implemented ALTEC VOTT, will be a single ended amp, not a push-pull amp, ( push-pull process out parts of the music with its phase inversion. ) Certainly not a Push Pull Parallel amp as pictured.

The best possible power range will be about 3 Watts, ( eg JJ 2A3-40, maybe an EML mesh plate ) and the amp will have only two amplification stages. It will also sound most coherent if the two tube stages were direct coupled.

I spent three days - this past Friday through Sunday, listening to just such an amp, on optimized GPA 604s in large MLTL enclosures, at the RMAF show in Denver. It is a hard combination to surpass !!

    Hi,

Last week when I planned to pick them up we powered them up just to make sure they worked fine. After 2 minutes 3 KT88 was fried in one of the monoblocks. We replaced them but no sound came out. Possible the resistors that had burned as a protection.

The shop told me that they need to ship them over to a tube specialist nearby. We will then check the two amps and make sure that Everything is ok Before picking them up. A descent suggestion and of course I don?t want any damaged amps as i saw Money fly by when the tubes began to pop....

They lent me a 300b set amp instead over the weeekend so I could listen to Music. Guess what, that set amp is still in my house. I canceled the hurricanes and Went for this solution instead. I don?t need more Power than this. Yesterday I also picked up 2 new JJ 300b tubes to replace the Valve art that was in that amp. I will also change the 6sn7 tubes for some descent ones, maybe Tung-Sol 6SN7GTB. There is already a Sovtek 5AR4 rectifier that will do god for now.

I have not Heard 300b Before with Altec and I must say they suit each other very well. The soundstage is so real compared to the more powerful tube amp I had Before.

I am SO happy for you !!!

Enjoy the amps. The best tube I find, on Altecs, is the new JJ 2A3-40, in a two stage, directly coupled amp. There is just ONE guy who makes the best of this breed. That is Dennis Fraker, who has Serious Stereo in Montana.

Write to me privately, and I will try to share some ideas for you to TRY, to optimize the system when using low powered amps. I am [email protected]. If you have a schematic of the "new" 300B amp, I would LOVE to see it.

    Thanks,

I scan the schematics tomorrow and email you.
