    Re: 909s are 1"

Altec thought it was ok to do this
Look how well the Altec Corporation is doing today.

I wasn't there. But, i think i can safely assure you that nobody in the acoustic lab or engineering department thought it was OK.

Many decisions were ultimately made in the marketing department where the bottom line reigns king.

I think also that you will find very few instances where Altec actually did commit the practice. You can cite late model 19's for a 902/811 combination. But, you must remember that the 19 was designed around the 802G HF driver.

FWIW, the 909 was a late to the party compared to the 902/908. Perhaps under the EV umbrella they made them differently.

the throat insert on my 902 has a 1/16 lip inside a 1" hole.
I'll measure one again tomorrow. But, it seems i recall the "hole" is actually a little bigger than 1 inch, and it is my wild assed guess that the lip you see is the end of the polepiece/throat where it is pressed into the front plate.

one more picture to go,,,,, I hate photobucket

ok, took 3 hours to get thru photobucket's slow assed site but here we are

this is a resized photo from the ebay add. while the scale may be off slightly it would have off the stud by a good 3/8'' for the 1" it shows the mouth being to be 7/8" instead.

    Re: 909s are 1"

Looks pretty darn conclusive to me Phil, thanks for posting all the pics.

That tool mark on your 902 is gross, no wonder the company died. That kind of machining and QC is unacceptable. That part should have gone to the scrap bin, and the operator to the unemployment line if he made very many like that.

They did a MUCH better job on that 909. I'd like to see one of those popped apart. It looks like at the very least the Buchanan boys re-engineered how the pole is attached to the front plate. Remember, the 909 was introduced about the same time as the 906 which is essentially a DH-2012(i think) with a modified snout/throat. In that time period several Altec badged products had a lot of EV going on inside.

Interesting that the bug screens are part of the gasket on those.

that 902 is also the one I checked the tangerine on and it wasn't there. I don't even see any sign of glue. it had an original diaphragm that was burnt to a crisp. I had to use a knife to pry it off with in pieces.
