Years of production of Altec drivers?

I recently acquired a pair of A7s. They both have 802-8D on 511b horns and 416-8A woofers, but the serial numbers are very far apart and they are cosmetically different. I assume they have the same operating specs. Anyone know of a resource that tells the years of manufacture for Altec drivers?

This forum is your best bet.

For starters, 416-8A could have been built in either the large or small frame. That would make them look quite different even though the motors and moving assemblies are identical.

    Let's see some pics.

Exactly as suspected, an older style 15 inch rear mount frame, and a newer style 16 inch front or rear mount frame.

The moving parts and motors will be exactly the same.

I have a couple of 416s that have the "B" style 16" cast frame with the "A" style Alnico magnets. I've been searching for another identical pair, and have been able to locate several of them. I'm wondering if this is what the OP has in his 16" speaker. I'm thinking that if the magnet cover was removed, he would find a similar construction.

Below is a picture of the style of 416 that I'm referring to. Is there an official designation for these? (These are not my pics.)

Its just the 16" frame versus the older 15". They are both 416a

    The 515 changed over mid "B" run. There are 15" 515b and 16" 515b.

30767 = 416-8z Look at the 4 possible woofer loads for the 846U here: http://www.lansingheritage.org/image...ers/page06.jpg

"Z" models were typically factory installed components in assembled speaker systems.

AFAIK, the "Z" version simply omits the can style motor cover.

I'm thinking that if the magnet cover was removed, he would find a similar construction.

The "Z" is identical to the "A" except for the magnet cover correct? Also were there any 15" Z's? I have only seen 16"

Yes green 416A 16ohm can also be found as 416Z, still a 15 inch green frame with no can on the magnet.
