I would build a 6uF version AND a 12uF version and listen for the one you like better.

Then you could similarly try the 10uF(single inductor) version vs the one you chose from the first comparison.
Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.

MAH ... sounds like a plan.. two final questions .... Altec wiring is 20 gauge .. would you change to 18 gauge or keep the 20 gauge
stock wires? Would you buy pass the protection circuit?

Model 14 Mods - Audiophile Nirvana

I would use 18 gauge but stock is OK - Altec development guys were happy to 'sign-off' on it.

I would leave the protection circuit in place. From what I have read it is transparent until activated. Replace the 470uF capacitor with a new one.

If you wish to take it out of circuit to listen for any difference it may makes, here is a simple method: see link above.

(The AUB reply process places links above the text for some reason, on my PC).

The article linked to, here, describes and shows pics for FOUR versions:

Altec Lansing Model 14, Part 1 - Audiophile Nirvana

Unless there is a fifth version(with 2 inductors), the inductor values shown in schematic 3, above, may be incorrect or the claim of L1=0.25mH and L2=0.67mH in the article may be incorrect.

I would support the idea that schematic no.3 should show L1=0.25mH and L2=0.67mH. Thus the only difference between schem. 1 & schem. 3 is C4(6uF vs 12uF), thus simplying crossover matching.

Single choke crossovers in the 9842s????, maybe.

4 different crossovers for the model 14 in its short life at the end of the Altec Consumer Product era seems odd but you ever know with Altec.

MAH - Recapped with 2uf and 12uf Solens Fast Cap 400v.. first time soldering on a circuit board.... also replaced the connectors with PE parts.. The 470uf capacitors still test within limits... would you replace?... For the record the 14s now sound great!... (before they sounded like a 'transistor radio' with a booming base)..... Next project are my Santana IIs ... Thanks for all your patience and help!

Good to see another pair of Altecs brought back to life.

I recommend replacement of the 470uF capacitor so as to have confidence in the protection circuit. It is not in the signal path so just use a cheap, reliable brand-name, one.
