The Jbl/Urei any good? They seem to be rarer. I have no experience with them but have heard 604s a few times

I have the first gen Urei 801/804 woofers. They are really 604G. You are correct, after that Altec stopped providing drivers. Someone told me the QC rejects were too high. Lol

The later versions seem to get good reviews. They also go for less than 604's.

I believe there are a couple different Urei speakers post Altec.
First a PAS then a JBL.
Your neighbors called. They like your music.

    FWIW:

Jammin' Jersey Music: Altec 604-K 15" Studio Monitor Speakers - No crossovers but that may or not matter if better DIY options are available.

Others may comment on whether this is a reasonable price. It looks good to me considering the GPA cones and diaphragms.

    Negotiation is worth a try.

    Re: Correct cones for 604-8K

It will be 23979-2, which is the cone part for 604-8G and 8H that I have seen, so might have lasted into 8K production.
035400 is the EV and GPA part number for the 60x series. Also the 515 series.

Magnarc, yes, and the 416. I think there must be a parts reference/s dated between the Altec 1975 one and the EV 1999 one. Sure would clarify some of the cone numbers that are not in either listing. The original 604-8Ks fall between these dates, as do other drivers. Bill H. may have the info, somewhere.

    Re: Correct cones for 604-8K

I have a 1979 parts list that only has voice coil/diaprgahm part numbers, not the cone number, and a similar Altec doc from 1996.

    Re: Correct cones for 604-8K

I saw a comment online that stated the 604-8K had a revised profile LF cone to better complement the new Mantaray horn.

I cannot find the post but it doesn't sound improbable. If this is true, using earlier cones wouldn't be good practice.

Is this something anyone else has come across?

    Re: Correct cones for 604-8K

What is then possible is that the 23979 is for the 8H and 8K both of which had Mantaray horns, and that the couple of 8Gs I've seen with 23979 were reconed.

It's hard to tell with Altec....
