A8 project - Serial number - Manufacture dates and

Hello! New to the forums and getting an error when attempting to search them.

I'm looking at purchasing pair of A8's as a project. Seller says hf drivers are shot. LF drivers ok.
Have some photos but haven't seen in person yet. Trying to identify their age and confirm driver types, etc.

I'm assuming they are later model. Am told they were pulled from the North Park theater in San Diego around 2002. Been in storage since.

    Any insight is much appreciated.s-l1600.jpg

They have 416C woofers (16 ohm) and 902/908 HF drivers. You can get replacement HF diaphragms through Great Plains Audio in OK.

Don't know the exact age of the speakers. They are after Altec switched to ferrite drivers. So post 1970's or after.

Someone will have better info than me. I am not too familar with the A8. I do like the 32b/c horns they have.

Are you planning on buying to restore them, or put the drivers in some different cabinets?

Hello! Thank you for the insight.

I was thinking ultimately I'd put them in another enclosure. Not sure yet. I would like to test them stock for my own knowledge.

I assume, based on what I've read that the A8 aren't as well liked as the A5's and A7's, etc.
They'll definitely fit my space better.

Date code on the 902 is 10th week of 1981.

The A8 will have a wider and smoother frequency overall response than A5 or A7 and will be better suited for musical playback in it's stock form.

    Hello!
And, thank you - I suspected these were from the 80's.
    I am considering the deal.

I'm going ahead with the purchase.

Did all the A8's run the same crossover - 800hz?
Looking at the Altec catalog for 1980 - for the A8B - shows 800hz.

I plan to grab diaphragms from GPA.
