A few years back I was in a discussion about these systems. I said that there were systems that used 290 drivers, and I had liquidated a number of surplus units for Altec.
Not sure if it was here, but a number of people said no, they all used screw on drivers.
I begged to differ then. If anybody remembers who expressed doubts, ask them to look at this eBay auction:

Your neighbors called. They like your music.
Holy Cows! 1/2 square mile coverage no less. Amazing what was going on back than. I wonder if any of them are still at the ready.

Wow thats pretty crazy. And cool
So is the "Airplane array" the father or grandfather to the line array ? Conservative is 140 db's @ 4'. So what"s that at a half mile charley ?
Going from dim memory, RCA's original? cinema speakers were screen height arrays on each side consisting of 15"? 'full-range' drivers on gimbals? to individually point them at specific portions of the audience. Huge flop.
~85 dB on average depending on weather conditions and assuming the plane's height is factored into the these specs.

Loud is Beautiful if it's Clean! As always though, the usual disclaimers apply to this post's contents.
So what was the coverage ? 10 15 by 40 or 25 ???
Dunno without knowing the 804's. The 803 is 35x70 and the 805 is 40x80, though even these aren't very accurate based on modern measurements, but no clue what the 804 is, plus if they were always canted like in the photo it would be even harder to predict.

Can someone smarter than I grab this picture off of ebay and post it to this post so that it can be viewed down the road. Ebay will remove the photo and once it's gone..............
To cool to lose.
