Other than dust, everything looks good...

    3

    417H 8 ohm I assume...

    4

    5

Type 32 horns are aluminum, have to pull driver before horn will come out...

    6

Only one 808 has a label, they are all what I call "tapered" driver body. One cab had a note about diaphragm replacement in 83 so hoping all are real Altec.

I had a pair of these, but I think the baffle allowed for the driver to be removed with the horn. It wasn't modified. It looked original. I think the rectangular hole had a curved area in the center cut out.

Edit: now that I think about it, maybe I had to remove the drivers first, as you said...... been too long.

I still have the drivers, and crossovers, but sold the horns, and gave the cabinets away. I had thought about making an A8 like cabinet, but never had the time/motivation to actually do it. I did use them as is in the living room for awhile.

Interesting, cast pot 808's with (i assume) metal annular slit phase plugs. They couldn't have made those for very long.

    Any date codes?

    Assuming '74-'75 vintage.

I have here a nice pair of cast pot 802-8Ds ( that are tapered ) .

Yes, they do sport metal annular-slit phase plugs .

Can't seem to spot any date codes for you ( fyi, these are serial #s 15558 & 15830 ) .

I have (4) 808's with the tangerine phase plugs. Cast steel tappered pots. And yes, they are cast steel, not cast iron. Very high FE content when I had one analyzed by a customer of mine. Zinc plated, first shot after I removed a patch of paint showed zinc as the major alloy, a real DUH moment on my part. Quick hit on the belt sander got me to bare metal.
I believe the magnetic circuit in the cast pot is much better than the welded pipe and plate pot found in earlier units. Thicker side walls and decent fillets in the corners allow the magnetic flux an easier passage. The pot and top plate are all part of the magnetic circuit.

I had a pair of 1231 that had the circular cut you mention.
