Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.

Is Hi-Fi Haven still there? Where was that... Whittier, CA? Bill Tandberg's place? I figured by now he'd be long gone... probably from this earth.

    On page 6 of Billfort's 604 Ramblings , I was referred
to as nuts. I thought my wife only said that.

    Re: Billfort's 604 Ramblings

In my opinion, its a nice system that will not quite live up to its potential of a 604 speaker. Maybe its 60 to 70% there.

Two EASY areas for improvement are needed :

( 1 ) The speaker wiring is totally insufficient to play bass and great dynamics.

As a result of this poor wiring, there is added system complexity - UN needed woofers and other junk, solid state amps, digital this and that, to get a low end that the 604 is capable of by itself, IF it was more perfectly executed.

( 2 ) The tube amp is only maybe about 65% of where it needs to be. Several mistakes in the design:

    a) The TWO-stage amp is 100% correct, KUDOS, but a cap-couple is the absolute WORST ( of three possible ) ways to connect two stages. It simply needs to be coupled the best way : a well executed directly-coupled 2A3 two-stage amp. ( Worst to best : cap, transformer, direct coupled ).

    b) What KIND of 2A3 tube is used, a bi-plate vintage one? If biplate, one surely needs to listen to a JJ 2A3-40, with symmetrical structures - symmetrical filament to grid and to plate, the vacuum tube audio bargain of our times.

    c) The amp likely has chokes in the B+ to his finals, that are probably well over 20 Ohms, which RUINS the low end and the dynamic contrasting capability of any ( and all ) tube amps in existence.

Usually tube amps are built with 100 Ohm Chokes, "mindlessly" used. In 2017, a few of us are using 6 ohm chokes, two in series, with fabulous sonic results on our Altec speakers.

The combination of the " typical " SET amplifier ( problems denoted above), and the wiring, is driving this system to become MUCH more complex, more expensive, and worst of all, lower performing musically, than it can be IMHO.

I do truly like his web presentation, and the way he writes it all up. Seems like a great guy, very honest .

The system is just " not quite " all there, as to what is easily possible in 2017. Wish I could talk to this gentleman some time, share schematics, or, better yet, have him to attend RMAF this October 6-8th and hear the to-be-demoed GPA 604s MLTLs with his own two ears, directly !!

Oh well, JUST my opinion folks !! From my own 604 listening experiences and audio experimenting. Hearing is believing.

The same stuff. Unsolicited. Questionable advice/opinions. Too much, too often. JIMHOOC.
