    Oddity on eBay

I know that Altec used this frame on some WWII era speakers, also know it was sourced from Utah. Utah continued into the 70's with that same frame. But have never seen this....
I have my doubts here, although that looks like could have been an Altec cone number...

Interesting mass ring. Looks like it's made out of a phenolic material similar to what the spider should be made from.

I think bow tie has nailed it. Its a (non OEM) re cone shoehorned into a non standard frame, that looks like a very new Altec logo stuck on.

Oddity yes. Frankentec yes. Valuable, who knows.

    Re: Oddity on eBay

It sure looks like a 416 motor pot. I don't believe a 515 magnet slug will physically fit inside. The 515 return pot is as big around as the mounting flange of the 416 return pot, and when assembled there's not much free space inside the 515 motor.

EDIT: thinkin with my butt, there is no flange on a 416A/Z pot, it just bolts up to the inner bolt circle on the basket. Note the 4 screws in this pic: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/g4OCNebAwy8/maxresdefault.jpg

And i have NEVER seen a Jensen motor cover on an Altec woofer.

Pretty much was my feeling. I don't think its an Altec. Someone slapped the sticker on. Why would the sticker be UNDER the pot cover?

    Re: Oddity on eBay

I think Old Guy and i have the same problem with it.

I can't find one thing about it that is "right", as in characteristic of anything Altec might have built.

Some versions of Jensen P15N look a LOT like that, flanged motor housing and all.

War time production with parts some parts sourced from Magnavox? None of that looks like recent work to me.

    Re: Oddity on eBay

Wartime production is correct. That's when production began, maybe a little after, like 1946.

The speaker in the OP/ebay auction is a Jensen JAP/JHP co-axial that has had the tweeter and associated bracket removed.

It's a Jensen style basket, the stamped 15 inch basket used by Altec was made by Utah and is very different with only 4 windows and spokes for starters. The Altec 600B uses a stamped basket with more windows and more Jensen-ish appearance.

Anywho, you can positively ID the speaker in question by the small holes drilled thru the rim on either side of one bolt hole, this is where the tweeter wires passed thru.

A google image search for "jensen jap" will reveal much.

For the sake of clarification i want to post an example of the Utah stamped frames used by Altec while the images are publicly available.

Altec 601 using the same stamped frame as above(Thank you Steve):

Very interesting. I found a thread where a guy found a pair in an attic. I had never heard of this driver before now.

Thanks for digging up the info.
