Off To The Landfill, Altec or JBL?

Horns falling out of the sky at 5:52.

Further research shows this was a crown powered JBL sound system, no loss at all. Carry on.

You have a sharp eye. I had to watch it twice to catch the shot of the horns falling. Seems the old stadium just did not want to crumble that easily, huh?

I?ve always wondered how much audio gear gets demoed with these old stadiums. Seems like some of the stuff gets taken down and saved, and other stuff just goes to the landfill.

I have heard stories of guys getting some great Altec scores from old arenas and stadiums.

You have to have some sort of "in" to get the goodies.

I would expect the liability of letting novices scale the rafters, or hiring a professional to remove them is far more costly in the long run than just letting them go in the demolition.

Those were certainly marketable horns and drivers, and could have flipped for enough to buy really nice Altecs.

Re: Off To The Landfill, Altec or JBL?

About fifteen years ago I bought a pair of University Classic three way horn systems on ebay. The seller had recovered fourteen of these systems from dumpsters at a college in Idaho after a construction crew had pulled them down from an arena and discarded them. The ones with heavily damaged boxes he pulled apart and sold the components, the nicer ones he had sold intact. This last pair he had saved for himself, until his wife told him that they were too large to go in the house!

I refinished the raw birch cabinets in a nice honey blonde finish and built nice inset grilles covered in white cloth. They have graced my brother and sister in law's living room ever since, serving as TV monitors for many hours a day. Can you imagine the mentality that would hurl these fine systems into a dumpster?

Re: Off To The Landfill, Altec or JBL?

I've been lucky to get some components from a couple of local venues. I have a pair of 203Bs from somewhere on NC State's campus, and I wound up with a couple of pairs of MR94Bs from Carmichael Auditorium in Chapel Hill. All that dust you see hanging on these was from guys like Michael Jordon, James Worthy, Sam Perkins, etc. I heard from my son that they were going to tear out the old sound system at NC State's Reynolds Gymnasium as well, but it slipped my mind to follow up on it....Oh well

It actually makes me ill to see any of these old systems going to the landfill !

They should at least off folks free pickup would save them money shipping to the landfill !!!
