Will it work, yes. Will it be a 416- no it will not.

Check the magnet specs - the 418 has a larger magnet slug. In plain English, that results in mid-band gain, all else being equal. That leads to less on the top and bottom, at least in a relative sense. To compound the bad deal on those, they weren't reconed with Altec parts. And not an especially good job of it.

The 420, OTOH has the same magnet as the 416, and can be reconed as a 416.

after looking at the specs looks like the same problem that Bowtie pointed out with mixing 414 cones with 417s.
the magnet on the 418 is rated at 13,000 gauss , compared to 12,000 with the 416. with the loss of low end.
one thing I have to wonder is, you can degauss and magnetize the magnet with the same machine. seems you should be able to set the level to match the driver your working on.

the specs I was looking at show both magnets to weigh in at 2.4 lbs. I thought they would be the same. ??

There might also be some difference in the structure, especially the front plate, which might affect the depth of the magnetic field.

Re: 418s reconed as 416s,, would it work?

Something is wrong on Altec spec sheets

416A sheet at GPA says 2.4 lb Alnico, overall weight 17 1/2 pounds.

418 sheet says 2.4 pound Alnico, overall 14 pounds 6 ounces.

    That just ain't right.

Having done reconing on both the 418 magnet looks bigger. And where would the extra 1000 Gauss come from? Perhaps the 418 just has a heavier casting, but then how can it be lighter?

Frame is for sure the same, as I have switched them.

Altec spec sheets often have mistakes. But not even close here.
