    GPA Products price increases

Looking on flea pay where GPA list their products, there have been some very steep increases in prices in the last month or two.

30% on the diaphragms, and the 604-8H III has almost doubled.

    Have costs risen THAT much??

There are no prices on the GPA site itself and it can be such a contradiction at times its hard to know what is current and what is superseded.

Wow, I see what you mean.

    GPA 414's & 416's are now up a staggeringly, 300% to $1,250.00 ( & this generation is sporting a smaller magnet housing/return pot ) .

Well,at the very least, this ( reach for the stars ) ought to draw into the eBay market more original Altec 414's ( & 416's ) from newly enthused sellers.

Someone is having a stroke I fear ( or this is a sign of the last "Hail Mary" that many of us have been waiting on ).

Well, that someone I'm almost sure is not Bill. I have two sets of drivers there at the moment and have spoken with Bill a couple of times in the last two weeks. I was told that there are new investors in the company and the decision for the price increases was not his. I did get the distinct impression that he does not agree with it, but doesn't have much choice or say in the matter. The company might've even been sold outright. I guess the new owners/investors are going after the East Asian market where Altec's are more in demand and can command higher prices.

Whatever the reason for this very sharp spike in prices and even though I want to see GPA stay in business for many years to come, this is sad news for the average Altec enthusiast. This to me, is most certainly a "what the market will bare" marketing strategy. GPA has been in business for about two decades now and has managed just fine. A three fold increase in prices cannot be explained in any other way.

Fear not fellow Altec enthusiasts! I saw this very same thing happen in '84 when EV\Gulton bought Altec. They inflate the price of the "products" so when the new owners take over it's at a loss. After a couple of months the prices return to normal. Too bad Uncle Willey selling out. Hopefully it's to some Americans and not Samsong.

Yep we have a choice, paying 10 or 15 year old prices, or not being able to buy them at all.

So, this is how we learn what produced the GPA forum and the attempt to take over existing Altec and JBL forums - a new owner grab.
Opinion is only as valid as its verifiable supporting evidence.

    Re: GPA Products price increases

I have no problem with incremental price increases over time, that is normal.

Its huge increases that I have an issue with.

    Re: GPA Products price increases

Ive been agonizing whether to go new or vintage and finally decided to go w the new stuff. I was just about to pull the trigger on woofers and tweeters and bamm... what the heck?? I thought I didn't get the pricing right to begin with like there was separate pricing for the Alnico stuff?? I couldn't figure it out until I saw this thread.

Oh well, back to the vintage stuff. A bit riskier but cooler and about half the price.
