    Re: New member question

I'm no web developer, but I know enough to use performance profiling tools in the browser to look at web site. It's not hard really, in Chrome you just hit F12 and then pick the "Performance" tab, start recording and then poke around in your browser window while the tool records. Then hit the record button again to stop. You'll get a nifty set of data that shows what's going on with the web server, network, scripting, etc.

What I saw looking at the performance of this site is that most of the delay when I click on something is due to load time. The browser was simply waiting on the web server to respond to requests.

So unfortunately, this has less to do with what browser you're using and more to do with what is causing the host board web server to take so long to respond to requests.

Yes, with Chrome I get a little pop-up for every command telling me it's waiting for www.Hostboard.com to respond........

I just noticed a new to me 3rd tier of formatting options that don't appear to be of any use to me/us for the type of posting we do, so yet another reason why it takes so long to post something?

    Re: New member question

You may be waiting on Hostboard, but I believe the way it works is that the board (any website) provides a different format/site/rules/whatever for each browser and version. The board knows what you're running, to an extent, and serves the page according to the way it's programmed for that browser, or whatever it thinks you're using. It could be the Hostboard is setup better for certain browsers and versions that others.

OK, then guess we need to find out what browser[s] it's optimized for. In my total ignorance of such topics, I assumed there was some sort of basic protocol? architecture? everyone used for windoze. Then again, the worst browser I've used is theirs, so guess that's why there are a number of others.

Firefox on Linux - barely a pulse..... I opened and briefly browsed another tube related board while the main page here was trying to load. But at least it did - this time...

The site is a huge repository of helpful information, buried in a larger site that apparently is the owners main interest.
I gather the ALTEC site was hosted here as a courtesy long ago. Sadly, it runs on old and creaky software that should be taken out and SHOT.
Also, since the ALTEC site is a custom site buried within someone else's take on a bulletin board,
it can't be easily migrated out to better, more appropriate software with a better interface.
I gather its a database driven (Most forum sites are) so it SHOULD be capable of being migrated out -
but I also gather the folks running it are not in charge of the larger site and are just stuck here.

Such a shame - ALTEC archives deserve better ...

    SOOOOOO. I'll ask here

    Dear Mr. White,
As a new member and having zero experience with Hostboard.com, i am curious
why the Altec users forum is sooooo slow.

The site has an incredible amount of information. I ask only because viewing
the website seems to be "more wait than read"..

    Respectfully,
    Johnmil

I am just a lurker here, unless I get to express the enjoyment I have gotten from my Model 15's over the last 30 some years.

I want to thank the Administrator and Moderators for their devotion to all things Altec!

I have noticed that at the top of the page is a request for donations to maintain the site. It requests $150.00 a month, yet I see that there are very few, if any donations. I include myself as a slackard.

Much like voting, if you don't do it, you have little right to complain.

I do not have a money transfer account. Where can I send a check?
