I would beg to differ (assuming I can get this posted....)
There are a lot of less knowledgeable people out there, looking for a better speaker solution. I am/was one. I think Altec is a better solution, although older and more difficult to get information about. There is still a lot of Altec gear out there which would provide a big upgrade for these 'seekers', as well as provide the equipment a new home. The missing part is this board, which provides information and the knowledge base to help enable these Altec newbies to be successful. Problem is, if you can't get at the information, it basically does not exist.
I started as a newbie about 2 years ago from the Klipsch world. Never built a speaker, but just wanted to bring my system to the next level. Through the help of the good people here, responding to a bunch of probably stupid questions, I gained the knowledge I needed to proceed. With that, I got a pair of 604s, and from another source a battered pair of Magnificent cabs. Out of it came a stunning pair of speakers (forget next level - final level), and I found someone here that wanted the horn sections, as well as someone that wanted the battered grills. Who knows what would have happened to that lovely Altec equipment otherwise.
I am not sure why it matters what type of power amp is used. I originally used a 35w push pull, and now I use a 50w SET amp. In my particular application, the SET does a much better job driving the 604s. Or maybe it is just a much better amp. I did not even mind the other person you are probably referring to, who was ejected from the community. In all that he said, there were a few interesting ideas that were at least worth considering. When I built up my crossovers for the 604, I used heavier gauge wire for the bass side of things, as well as the crossover to 604 runs. It sounds great. Is it actually better than a different approach? I will likely never know, or be motivated to find out.
I would never have been able to do what I did without this board, and there are likely others out there like me that would find this resource invaluable (if they can find it, and it actually works)
