    604B rebuild. Surround query

I shall shortly start the rebuild of a 604B pair. My question is which type of surrounds should I opt for? Original spec paper edge or cloth edge? I have Bakelite spiders to go with the paper surrounds.
I also need advice on vc impedance. The original was 16 ohms, but I would be sourcing new diaphragms and building new x overs, so should I go for 8 ohms?

    Regards,

Paper surrounds?! They were part of the original cones, which are long gone, so where did you find proper replacements? Regardless, OEM sounded superior compared to the later doped cloth back in my teens, though distort much quicker due to basically no linear excursion [Xmax], so best for small studio, radio station booth sized rooms if not loaded in an original A6 [less stand]: http://www.voiceofthetheatre.com/ima...att1945.10.jpg

    Depends on what's driving them..........

    Re: 604B rebuild. Surround query

    Hallo GM,

    Thanks for looking in here.

Professional reconing guy here has cones imported from the USA. He has them with both types of surrounds.

Regarding cabs for them, I was under the impression that the 620, original or Jeff Markwart's version is the best. What is your opinion and suggestion.

I have a choice of amplifiers. Valve single end 1.5 or 4 wpc pp upto 25 wpc, SS class A 15 wpc.

    Regards,

    Greets!

Hope they work out for you, all my resources say there's been no OEM spec originals or reproductions for a long time now.

Anyway, don't recall Jeff having a design, so got a link?

The factory recommended the ~8 ft^3 /45 Hz 605 cab with the 620 a bit smaller, but at this point I think it best to wait till yours are measured to decide size/tuning. Ditto amp choice.

    Hallo GM,

I recall looking at a 620 redesign that was a bit slimmer and taller than the original. I have associated that with JM in my memory, but that could e a mistake. Shall try to find and link it here.

    Greets!

No need, was just curious since what matters is how tall, wide, deep a cab you can tolerate, desired seated ear height, sloped baffle or not, room acoustics, listening distance, etc., and last, but not least, your performance requirements since we all hear the same, yet not so much.

In short, 'best' for the individual is normally the best compromise once all this is factored in.
