Wow, I'd pay to play with those.

Your neighbors called. They like your music.

If I was close, or visiting my inlaws, I would grab these at this price.
Wow, first time I've seen that speaker from Altec. It appears to me more of a PA type of speaker, not sure how well it would do for home audio?
Matt
i have a pair of those. i hooked them up once on my back porch. they sounded good. i just wish they were selling for a bit more. Mine started out as 816 VIs. but i bought the drivers from a pair of 9864s. the guy sent me the horns, hardware, and the terminal plates. so i swapped everything out and now they're 9864s i just now put the 515GHPs from them in my 828s. maybe i'll hear them this weekend.

Hi Gearfreak, I think your last comment pretty much sums up my doubts on these things. If there is anyone in this world that knows how these things might sound at home, it would be the folks on this board. I was hoping volvoherectic might chime in, but he has not.
Based on information and opinions on this board, I learned that:
1. Its a PA speaker
2. Goes down to 50Hz and that is being optimistic.
3. Need 1KHz crossover, with some build in equalization
4. The 515GHP has the same cone as 515G and the rest of the woofer is designed for power handling at the expense of fidelity. AFAIK, the 515GHP cannot be retrofitted to a 515G
5. The 299 is not a 288.
6. The drivers shared the same magnet structure and cannot be separated.
Basically, if I do not like the sound, I end up with a boat anchor. No way to part any of it out, The design is intriguing enough. Sort of like a 604 on steroids. I guess that is what peak my interest.
Seller and I have been communicating. so at this point I am going to check them out...
mmm. Or if there is something wrong with the LF/engine.
But if they are headed east, I can't imagine you'd not be able to make your purchase price back upon reselling them. A large format HE 'true point source' surely is tempting for the low/flea-power experimenters.
The dispersion characteristics (for home use) would be my first concern. Phil-G's neat conversions are on a porch..? Phil, so how do they sound?
