Thanks GM. The air approach probably would let you feel for the flaw as well. It'd be a little ungainly with the duplex structure, and the bug screen so close in the short mantaray 'throat'.

    I was thinking 1.5v...

but first I think I will just pull it out and see what can be gleaned with a strong flashlight.

So if the image loads at proper res, despite the severe JPG compression required to get below 97.5 kb...
(The terminal you see is on the diaphragm).

Your task is to spot the flaw responsible.

Of course those who know what they are looking at will probably be able to make the correct educated guess. :-)

    * and (second pic) I did look with a strong flashlight. Did not find anything of course.

...but for some reason, I have a sudden urge to pile all my mashed potatoes into a mound in the middle of the table. hmm.

'......and God said "let there be light and there was light". Looks like Bubba torqued the screw, starting a chain reaction.

edit: wait one; if no light is seen, why are the solder joints lit up? Makes me think they're fried, which goes with the damage.

    We have a winner.

yup! Bubba coulda been me for that matter. Hairline 'lightning' crack in the loading cap from the screwhead to appx 7oclock in the pic.

Back off on the screws, and fs is back up to where it should be.
So diaphragm seems fine as expected and I'll look for a replacement LC.

The light coming through the 2 leads where they dive down to the VC is just those gaps colored by the factory ambergoop,
It is a strong light (no other sources in the room), and a fast lens.

Bright light indeed! Cool, dodged a bullet! Kind of surprised it sealed back up.

The number and variety of repairs I've done or oversaw due to folks over tightening joints where a torque wrench [or calibrated wrist/elbow] is ideally required staggers me when I think back over the decades, especially where soft or brittle materials are involved and/or the right hardware wasn't used.
