Only an idiot would do that.
Not sure if that is even an Altec cone.
Probably worth the price as a core for rebuilding.
I swear I’ve seen this speaker for sale before. 604G with a plastic coating on the cone. Seller says it helps protect against the humidity. Hmm.
He is selling is with a Valencia crossover and some other Altec crossover. Interesting.

Your neighbors called. They like your music.
I think I saw this same 604 for sale a couple years ago. If I remember correctly it was mentioned in a thread on AudioKarma.
I agree it’s probably just a good core at this point. And right, maybe they ruined a recone instead of an original.
I have read about people coating cones with a glue and water mixture. It’s supposed to lower the Fs right?
Also, don’t speakers that are used outside sometimes get their woofers coated? I could see if a speaker lived outside in FL the humidity would get to it.
I had a pair of 421a woofers that were wavy as hell. The cones were also super sun bleached. They were a light brown. But they still worked and didn’t have an VC rub.

It does.
Yes, Fs, Qms decrease and Qes, Qts increase: Thiele Small parameters equations - How each one affects the others
Water based glue, etc., coatings, shellac, Dammar are popular with DIYers for damping inexpensive 'wide/full' range drivers. For lowering Fs, some type of weight is normally added.
Yes, if made from paper and not otherwise pre-treated.
All we did for the tropics, etc., was with the dirty amber colored goop you see on electrical components, transformer windings insulation thinned down as required. Really nasty stuff to work with.

GM: Have you ever seen a 604 treated like this? Seems like the Fs is already a decent number with these.
Why is there a pic of the cone un-treated, are we supposed to hear the difference in the ad?
Why doesn't he identify the period correct crossover chassis?
Hopefully, it wasn't driven too hard using that B Valencia network.
I agree with OG's theme, offer to buy it as a re-buildable core and let the surprises all be pleasant ones.
Not all vegetables make good leaders.
What are 604G cores going for nowadays? I paid around 300$ each for my Urei 604G drivers with good (but aftermarket) cones. But maybe they were cheaper because they have the Urei horn and not the Altec....
I didn’t see any completed sales for 604G in need on a recone on the bay.
I figure if he came down to 400$, then it’s 150ish$ to recone, plus 100$ shipping round trip. So that’s 650$ but doesn’t address the HF diaphragm. Who knows what’s in there now and what the guy did to it.

Also the guy talks about his cabinet having two sections connnected by a 2? tube. But his cabinet drawing seems to show a normal configuration of the cabinet (one big box).
It seems like the 2? tube wouldn?t be big enough to let the air move between the upper and lower cabinet...

No, just the shellacking like we did at Eaton/C-H, which barely lowers Fs, which while light by modern standards is still pretty heavy compared to a synthetic coating or two, though [shellac] stiffens them till they sound like dull metal, i.e. very bright like the horn, so a good match if the rest of the system is 'dark', i.e. all the early amps I've been exposed to out of broadcasting, cinema, etc., systems.
