I'm also curious about this speaker .It was a 12"
Altec duplex made in the 1980's if I'm not mistaking.

Does JBL or ALTEC have the original cast to make this model?

First, we must be specific about which version of 813 you have. Are they just an "813" or are they an A, B, or C version? The original 813 and the A version used modified Altec 604-8G and 604-8K drivers, respectively. The later versions used JBL drivers since JBL had purchased UREI by this time. Here is a link to some documentation:

UREI was very concerned about having identical drivers in a stereo pair and consequently rejected many of the drivers that Altec supplied to them. I would suggest that in searching for replacements that it may be worthwhile to pay some attention to this. If you have the original drivers the clear thing to do is contact Bill at Great Plains Audio and have them rebuilt.

UREI's are about the most accurate implementation of an Altec speaker you can find. Enjoy!

    studiosoundman:

UREI monitor series can be identified by the crossover model number; here's the Altec-equipped UREI 813 range breakdown:

    <pre>

Model xover coax horn LLF driver
    813 838 800A (604-8G) 800H (no foam) 800W (alnico)

    813A 839 800AA (604-8K) 800HA (foam/slots) 800W (ferrite)

By what the owner says " WILL SOUND BETTER WITH SUB WOOFER". They seem to need new XO.
Probably why he is parting from them.Just speculating.

    Convergence:

Nice pair, with extra coax and LLF driver.

The UREI monitors are designed to be quarter-space soffit-mounted; without room loading, response rolls off below 100 hz. The enclosures are resistively-leaky sealed and are very well-damped (UREI coined the term `pressure-controlled'); hence, the high f3.

Freestanding UREI monitors always require additional subwoofers; you'll find this Bob Hodas Mix Magazine article quite interesting:

To Woof Or Not To Woof? A SUBstantial Question

I disagree with Mr. Hodas regarding the need for stereo subwoofers (particularly very high quality low-distortion models now available) but the rest of the article is quite informative.

Also, the Ebay auction did NOT mention requiring any crossover work; with high-quality Sprague polypropylene film capacitors, the crossover will NEVER `wear out' though the 25 ohm variable resistors can become intermittent (and are best replaced with fixed resistors of the proper value).

BobR speaks the truth! After I became the proud owner of a pair of UREI 811A's (smaller cabinet than the 813A's without the second woofer - one person can almost lift them) I brought them home and compared them to my Model 19's. There was no doubt that there was something special going on with the 811A's in the mid and high frequency spectrum that the 19's didn't quite have. Imaging seemed more precise as well. But the 811A's had no bottom end! After BobR's explanation it became clear that since my space didn't offer an appropriate location to mount the UREI's that a powered sub-woofer was in order. Now, I think the 811A's w/sub may be preferable to the 19's but I'm not going to hold it against them. forums
