ugh. my computer died. just.... DIED. the hard drive said bye bye... the stupid light won't even come on, lol... no more deathly ticking noises... just black screen and that's it. i was scared i was gonna have to buy a whole new computer.. but i called the computer guy and asked about hard drives, etc etc... he said i could get a used hard drive, a small one, for like $60... Well, then of course they charge labor, and keep my computer for like a week... A new drive at staples is like $80 or $90... but my brother is going out to get it as soon as call him back and give him the model number... and coming to my house to install it tonight, or in the morning... then voila! i will have my computer back again... without incident... i hope.

*sighs*... the bad news is that he says i probably won't be able to recover any of the stuff on my old hard drive, due to the way it broke down... it checked the drives and started deleting all kinds of stuff... he says he doubts any of the files are still intact or some computer guy blah blah blah.. *L*... meaning, i've lost all my pictures of everyone that i collected over the years... *cries*...and my list of birthdays, addys, and phone numbers...

[img]graemlins/broken_heart.gif[/img] AND every single extra thing i have ever added to paint shop pro to do my designs... all my frames and textures... gone... the unique colors that i had saved... gone. PSP itself... gone. I had about 6 folders worth of backgrounds that i'd collected over the last couple of years... my folder which had every design i've ever done for this board and for don's... and also wild's... gone. all the pictures i had collected for a couple of new boards i'm working on... gone.

it could be worse, though... i could have to buy a whole new computer.. which means i'd be offline for a few months saving money to get the one that i actually want. In a few months of surfing time, i will have run across 500 more backgrounds and textures that i wanna save... i can go to the same spot to get my frames back... find a place to download PSP from for free... and get up and going again... i'm just the sentimental kind... none of the stuff i had was really important stuff... well, not to anyone but me... but it was mine...

LOL... i'm kinda glad the computer guy isn't doing it... he's the computer tech for where i work, and he's nosy... i know for a fact that when people take their comps there, he searches their hard drives for good stuff... i can just see him coming up here and telling my boss about all the fucking PORN i have on my computer... ERRRRRRRRRRRRRR. i mean... um... what? hmmm... oh well, anyway... *halo*

hopefully it will all be worked out, and by tomorrow i will be set up and hard at work...

I can probably get you a good jump on backgrounds and such. If nothing else I can get you websites on where to find stuff. At least you don't have to replace the whole comp. That sucks hardcore. And if you look around you can find stuff for the comp pretty cheap.

yes... finally, lol. it took a good while to get the hard drive installed and install windows back to the computer... cuz come to find out, i don't even have the required amount of memory to load Windows XP... lol. oooooooops. I thought i had 256... nope, 128... he's gonna pick me up 2 256 memory sticks, and upgrade it to 512. That's the max this comp can handle... i went from a 20 gig hard drive to a 160... LOL. i have about 5 more times more space... with more memory, i have been told i will run about 50 times faster... *L* i hope so....

now if i can just get everything loaded back to the comp, i will be in business again... i have a link to re-download my paint shop pro... have downloaded my yahoo messenger and will soon download my msn messenger... and to the graphics forum i frequent and reaquire all my frames and textures... search fonts... grrr... i had a great site bookmarked in my favorites... dammit. *L*

and thank you, BMR, for offering to help with the backgrounds and such.... i know a couple of sites that i have gotten from over the years but again... i don't have anything that was in my favorites. lol.. so any help is definitely appreciated...

I can only upgrade to 512 on this bloody thing too. *growls* So I have to send the 2 banks of 512 back and ordered a new 256 to go with the 256 I have. Thank GAWD my video card has 256MB onboard RAM. Stupid piece of shit computer. We are looking at building me a new one once we get some of his stuff paid off.

One of these days I am going to pull most of the pictures and stuff off and save them to disks so you are welcome to a copy of them. I can transfer over some of what I have on yahoo or MSN.

i recommend absolutely no less than 512mb of ram..id honestly say 1GB (1024mb)is the preferred choice for design work or multi tasking... no less than 256mb graphics... i dont recommend integrated graphics at all...i say a seperate card is the way to go but frankly id say 512 or higher still...no less than a 2.0Ghz processor (if its dual or quadcore) no less than a 2.8Ghz if its just a standard chipset...key thing to remember is to have enough in your power supply to run it all...for most people id say use two hard drives...each being about 80-120Gbs in size...one being a perfect backup of the other..save everything in its original form to both drives...then as you make changes put it on one drive only...if that drive ever fails you can always just go back to the extra one..(occasionally as you make upgrades in programs like messengers and things like that transfer the uninstalled versions to the extra drive so if you need to start over you have the unopened upgrades already ready) in the event of total failure you can simply switch to the other drive..and when ready copy the files over again to the first drive..or if it is bad..replace it and start the process over again...little if any down time with an extra drive in reserve...or even purchase an external hard drive with massive storage opportunities..similar process involved of course...

I have an 80 gig external hard drive and I dont
know what I would do without it! I actually need
another one for my designs though! My internal
hard drive just has my programs on and my external
has my files so it makes my computer run so much
faster without all the extras on the internal!

going from 20 gig to 160 gig should be wonderful... *huge smile*.... though it may not let me use the full capacity due to the limitations of my comp... it's over 5 years old now.... closer to 6 i'd say.... the book that came with the drive said it may not be able to handle using the full amount of space... considering it's like 5 times more than i had... i think it will be plenty... *L*
